Two U.S. Journalists in N. Korea Are Said to Be Pardoned
The North Korean leader, Kim Jong-il, pardoned two jailed
American journalists, the official KCNA news agency has
reported, according to Reuters. The report came after former
President Bill Clinton met with the reclusive and ailing Mr.
Kim in Pyonyang on Tuesday.
Mr. Kim granted "a special pardon," KCNA said in a statement.

(from http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/05/world/asia/05korea.html)
"It was widely assumed that Mr. Clinton would not have undertaken the mission without specific assurances that Ms. Ling and Ms. Lee would be released."
Really now? How does that work, exactly? _________________ "You have your way. I have my way. As for the right way, the correct way, and the only way, it does not exist."

PS I'm glad they're home & have no illusions about what these women have gone through. I'm commenting about media coverage. I remember seeing Rachel Maddow report on their imprisonment a few months ago, before their trial: a Korean spokesman, when asked how they'd be treated, scoffed: "We're not Guantanamo." |

Can anyone possibly imagine Bush (Jr. or Sr.) as capable of doing a small task like this with such grace? Okay, yes, Bubba is a perverted, murdering NWO stooge, but, you know, nicely done. _________________ The most dangerous traps are the ones you set for yourself. - Phillip Marlowe |

I recall reading somewhere, actually it was just a glance, that the usual GOP rightwing nutjobs were stridently claiming that practicing diplomacy with N. Korea was absolutely a horrible idea, if not actually treasonous. Apparently their theory is that a nation exercises Diplomacy only from a position of weakness, and a reputation from weakness is the only possible result. Apparently their position was that sacrificing the journalists was preferable to losing the US's hardass, belligerant image.
If Bush or one of their own had managed to get N Korea to release these guys I don't doubt they'd be crowing over their smooth success. Until this ridiculous 'whatever the other guys do is BAD!' partisan BS is removed by the miracle of a congressional clean-sweep, I suspect things will only get more extreme, hypocritical and self-servingly absurd, going from bad to worse, before it gets even worse. And then things will get REALLY, REALLY bad for a long time until it gets only a little less than REAL bad.
Sometimes, I wish I could take a nap for the next 50 or 100 years.
Or else go off planet for a long, long trip. |
