Most interesting...

Why indeed would Phil and Mickey join this club?

There have been speculations that the Dead were an outgrowth of, and that they and similar groups were encouraged as part of a CIA operation. This operation involved Timothy Leary (an operative) and was an outgrowth of the CIA's mind control experiments involving LSD in the 1950's and 60's.

The basic nut of the story is that groups such as the Dead were encourged as a strategy to deflect the anti-war and other elements of the 60's movement from politcal activism to "turn on, tune in and DROP OUT". These efforts were designed to deflect the movement away from political transformation/reform to internal reflection and political apathy.

So..... this makes some sense. Were Phil and Mickey the agents? I can't stand the thought that Jerry may have been.

Edited by: isachar at: 6/14/06 2:21 pm

The Dead Never Die

Postby Pissed Off Cabbie » Wed Jun 14, 2006 4:55 pm

I live in San Francisco, and I've known enough Deadhead predators to not be surprised by this development.

Through and through, the Dead are a cult, and it's followers have been lead off of a cliff. At no time has any activism ever been encouraged by these reprobates. Instead, an unenlightened, freeloading, mindless, hedonistic lifestyle is presented as the answer to the woes of the establishment. It's no wonder that Jack Kerouac drank himself to death. This was not what he had in mind.

However, some of the most politically active people I knew during the (late) 60's, 70's and 80's were also Dead fans.

The Dead And The Dying

Postby Pissed Off Cabbie » Wed Jun 14, 2006 7:31 pm

Casual Dead fans come in all colors, but the hard-core, follow-Jerry-to-the-ends-of-the-earth variety were something special. The fortunate ones had trust-funds, while others scammed along, selling drugs, pedalling burritos at the shows, and sleeping on someone's couch.

Some snapped out of it, but many did not. Pay a visit to Golden Gate Park, and you can see the remnants of this "movement". The mantra was, "Don't just do something, sit there". Sit they will, until the end of time.

Dead Grove

Postby professorpan » Wed Jun 14, 2006 10:28 pm

Sasha Shulgin also attends Bohemian Grove, and I know he's not an evil, sellout elitist.

I think the Grovers like to party hard, which is one reason for the intense secrecy. It makes sense that psychedelic aficionados would be invited -- they bring the hard-to-find goodies.

Just speculating, of course.

I don't believe the Dead were part of a plot to derail the radical politics of the 60s -- they really weren't that influential on a mass level until the 1980s, when they started selling out stadiums and became the biggest grossing act on tour.

And the scene was a lot of fun for an amateur cultural anthropologist like myself, until it became overrun with trust-fund frat boys dealing acid. Heroin, coke, and even crack made inroads into the culture, and it got very ugly in the last few years before Jerry died.

prof, fyi, the Dead were selling out large stadiums throughout the country well before the 1980's, of that you can be sure.

They, along with Leary (and a few others), pioneered the acid tests in the early 60's. You might want to do a little research about Leary, the CIA, and its use/experimentation with certain drugs and psychoactive substances.

Dead End

Postby Pissed Off Cabbie » Thu Jun 15, 2006 4:29 am

We could debate the merits or demerits of the Dead for endless pages, but the fact remains that Bob Weir and Mickey Hart have been Bohemian Grove invitees for a number of years now, and seem to have been attendees. And, unless spectacularly naive, the two are most certainly aware of the nefarious nature of these meetings. What are we to make of this?

Yeah, another retrograde reprobate repukican "skunk".

If I recall, he was even been invited by the Republicans to testify before Congress in the early 1990's on throw weights and missile / defense issues. Sheesh.

I never did like the Doobie Bros. Another trite little band with nothing to say.

Lots of kool aid to go around and lots of ways to push it. I think HMW's got this nailed with his theory of nesting and implanted messages in various media sources. These messages are re-inforced, repeated and amplified elsewhere - schools, politics, church, etc.

The dead

Postby yathrib » Wed Jun 21, 2006 11:49 pm

If the GD ever had *anything* to say, or any talent to say it with, it would be news to me. Not even massive doses of mind altering drugs could make them good, or even tolerable. The nude emperor comes inevitably to mind...
