It will be a different kind of fascist state from the one of the Germans evolved; theirs grew out of depression and promised bread and work, while ours, curiously enough, seems to be emerging from prosperity. But in the final analysis, it's based on power and on the inability to put human goals and human conscience above the dictates of the state. Its origins can be traced in the tremendous war machine we've built since 1945, the "military-industrial complex" that Eisenhower vainly warned us about, which now dominates every aspect of our life. The power of the states and Congress has gradually been abandoned to the Executive Department, because of war conditions; and we've seen the creation of an arrogant, swollen bureaucratic complex totally unfettered by the checks and balances of the Constitution.

In a very real and terrifying sense, our Government is the CIA and the Pentagon, with Congress reduced to a debating society. Of course, you can't spot this trend to fascism by casually looking around. You can't look for such familiar signs as the swastika, because they won't be there. We won't build Dachaus and Auschwitzes; the clever manipulation of the mass media is creating a concentration camp of the mind that promises to be far more effective in keeping the populace in line. We're not going to wake up one morning and suddenly find ourselves in gray uniforms goose-stepping off to work. But this isn't the test. The test is: What happens to the individual who dissents? In Nazi Germany, he was physically destroyed; here, the process is more subtle, but the end results can be the same.

I've learned enough about the machinations of the CIA in the past year to know that this is no longer the dreamworld America I once believed in. The imperatives of the population explosion, which almost inevitably will lessen our belief in the sanctity of the individual human life, combined with the awesome power of the CIA and the defense establishment, seem destined to seal the fate of the America I knew as a child and bring us into a new Orwellian world where the citizen exists for the state and where raw power justifies any and every immoral act. I've always had a kind of knee-jerk trust in my Government's basic integrity, whatever political blunders it may make. But I've come to realize that in Washington, deceiving and manipulating the public are viewed by some as the natural prerogatives of office. Huey Long once said, "Fascism will come to America in the name of anti-fascism." I'm afraid, based on my own experience, that fascism will come to America in the name of national security."

Edited by: nomo at: 3/14/06 6:30 pm

(Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., in
Foreign Affairs (July/August 1995)

"Today, America would be outraged if U.N. troops entered Los Angeles to restore order . Tomorrow they will be
grateful! This is especially true if they were told that there were an outside threat from beyond , whether
real or promulgated, that threatened our very existence. It is then that all peoples of the world will plead to deliver them from this evil. The one thing every man fears is the unknown. When presented with this scenario, individual rights will be willingly relinquished for the guarantee of their well-being granted to them by the World Government."
(Dr. Henry Kissinger, Bilderberger Conference, Evians, France, 1991 )

"The drive of the Rockefellers and their allies is to create a one-world
government combining supercapitalism and Communism under the
same tent, all under their control.... Do I mean conspiracy? Yes I do. I
am convinced there is such a plot, international in scope, generations
old in planning, and incredibly evil in intent." ( Congressman Larry P.
McDonald, 1976, killed in the Korean Airlines 747 that was shot down
by the Soviets)

"We are grateful to The Washington Post, The New York Times, Time
Magazine and other great publications whose directors have attended
our meetings and respected their promises of discretion for almost forty
years. But, the work is now much more sophisticated and prepared to
march towards a world government. The supranational sovereignty of an
intellectual elite and world bankers is surely preferable to the national
autodetermination practiced in past centuries." "If Big Brother comes to America, he will not be a fearsome, foreboding figure with a heart-chilling, omnipresent glare as in 1984. He will come with a smile on his face, a quip on his lips, a wave to the crowd, and a press that (a) dutifully reports the suppressive measures he is taking to save the nation from internal chaos and foreign threat; and (b) gingerly questions whether he will be able to succeed."

- Michael Parenti, Inventing Reality: The Politics of News Media, 1993

Read "Friendly Fascism" by Bertram Gross. Written in the early 80s and still absolutely relevant.

Some reader reviews: www.amazon.com/gp/product...e&n=283155

Friendly Fascism

Postby Pissed Off Cabbie » Thu Mar 16, 2006 5:34 am

They aren't even friendly about it anymore. It sure is rude to stuff people into orange jumpsuits and have dogs bite them. I guess the gloves are off, and we just have to deal with it.

pissedoffcabbie.blogspot....movie.html

Pissed off Cabbie or anyone else,

What's your view on why it went so rapidly from friendly to unfriendly? Why not take it a bit slower and not potentially alarm as many people? Why permit the horror show of the last few years unabated? What's the rush?

NewKid, I think it's because people are waking up. Wide awake people are liable to do something about the situation. Wide awake people need to be shown that something might happen to them if they try to take matters into their own hands.

Sunny, I think that's right. I also see that there might be some conditioning of another sort going on, sort of apropos of what Jeff's latest innoculation post mentions.

Rapidly? I dunno. Didn't the militarization of American law enforcement begin in the 1980s, for instance? The years following 9/11 have only seen an acceleration, exploiting the momentum created by the "incident" for what it's worth.

Indira Singh said, in an interview, that she thinks Americans are "being tested".

Yes, the American people are being tested. We (the majority, ie working people) are being pushed and pushed into a corner, with draconian measures against our freedoms, our choices, our ability to sustain ourselves and our families, our access to accurate information, and by a blatant eliminationist agenda.(and much more) The test is- can we resist the temptation to resort to violence, which would rip the mask off "friendly" facsism once and for all. Just what "they" are hoping for.

Peaceful resistance- a garlic laced stake in the heart of the beast.
