One small(personal) victory

Postby Et in Arcadia ego » Sat Aug 12, 2006 7:14 pm

So this guy comes in the tatoo shop this afternoon and wants to get a swastika covered up on his arm. He had half the money he needed for what he wanted, but I decided to do it anyways, because for me, anyone trying to break free from that kind of idealogy deserves any assistance that I can provide. That didn't stop me from messing with him a little, of course..I told him that I would recieve a great deal of satisfaction in covering his tattoo up due to the fact that I had 27 family relatives die in the Nazi camps. He looked at me sharply and asked me if I was going to gouge him on purpose and I just laughed and told him not to worry about it.

So we're sitting there doing the work, and talking about ourselves and all the rest of the crap. He went to prison and like so many others was drawn into the white brotherhood thing out of neccessity for protection/support, etc. He told me how messed up he was for years after getting out and having to live with the hate-shit they tried to infect him with, which he has finally overcome to his advantage. All in all, a pretty smart and experienced guy who came back from mistakes he'd made and sought to leave the nasty shit behind him.

He was VERY happy with what he recieved from me(a silhouette of the Marines symbol), and couldn't thank me enough. As I was bandaging him up, he started fiddling with a necklace he was wearing, finally removed something from it and handed it to me saying thanks again as he left.

This is what he gave me:

All in all, an even trade that I'm completely satisfied with.

____________________
Some are born to sweet delight, some are born to endless night.

That's really a cool thing to have happen I'd not really thought about that before--that not everyone joins those racist gangs out of complete agreement with their principles. I'm glad this guy had his head on straight...or, at least, eventually got it o straight. Thanks for posting about your experience.

LilyPat

The thing about this that was so significant for me is that proportionally speaking in terms of my 17 year carreer as a tattoo artist, I've covered up maybe...two or three others.

That's it.

Sadly, instead of eliminating them, I've applied them. Many, many times. And before people get up in arms about that, let me explain my logic behind doing it. The way I see it, if someone's in a state of mind where their hatred boils over to the point they're willing to externalize it on the skin, the least I can do is provide my services not so much to them as it is to the people around them, so those individuals have a better idea of where this person's at ideologically speaking.

I consider those kinds of tasks a public service.
____________________
Some are born to sweet delight, some are born to endless night.

I raise my glass .

I saw a piece yesterday about the number of tattoos removed in a west coast clinic, (about 10 a week) mostly asian characters translating to something like "naive white boy".

lol..

Caveat Emptor.

A very wise tattooer once said in an interview that everyone gets the tattoo they deserve. Didn't make much sense to me until I'd been working for a few years. Artists make mistakes same as everyone else.

But once in a while, they're not mistakes, eh?

____________________
Some are born to sweet delight, some are born to endless night.

The coin as it was stamped seems to be same as this one pictured here
....if you go down just a bit to a set of 7 coins under heading
"Nazi German Minor Coins", it is the first one on the left.

Good story!

Ahh, a happy story, thanks much, and kudo's. I agree with your public service' line, stupidity/evil is less dangerous in plain sight.

Kudos!

Little things like this make a real difference.

If you don't mind the indulgence, I gotta share one of my own...

Back in the late 80's when I was still a punk by nature, a casual friend of mine (good friend of my room mate) was getting into the whole "skinhead" thing. He started talking Aryan nonsense and associating with a local skinhead "leader", and listening to White Power strains of punk.

This didn't sit well with either my or the room mate, so one night we convinced him to go see Spike Lee's "Do The Right Thing".

The discussion afterwards was quite interesting, and about a month later he came by the house (with a cast on his arm) to thank us for taking him to see it. He found himself putting their rhetoric in the context of the movie, and challenging the views of his "new friends", which lead to the cast. That took a lot of courage on his part.
