Excerpt it

Postby DrDebugDU » Thu Jul 28, 2005 7:09 pm

If you don't want any problems then you can either use a very small part (the 4 paragraph rule) or blend it in with other relevant material from your own writing or other sources (fair excerpting with reference).

For example you often see that people take pieces for different sources and then reference it. So (1) and then add (1) something.com/bla.htm etc.

Those are fair and allowed ways to do it if you use the material in a non-commercial way.

You can show a whole document as well, but in that case the copyright holder can make an argument that it is not fair use but just a copy of his/her material.

The best approach is to make the material part of a greater part. It is harder, but it is the best way to do it and it also allows you make a better and more complete story out of it.

I read the NY Press article. Taibbi didn't quite support his headline. Why does he think the story is coming back? Nothing he mentioned is new information. Because he realized it was more blatant than Florida means its going to make a comeback?...<---words of a sore loser. When I saw the facts of the Ohio election, I was convinced it wouldn't go away, but it did.

...and why wasn't this sub-capitol hearing getting the web buzz that Conyers' DSM hearing was getting? Oh, because the press already knew there was nothing to it. Good thing that journalist accidentally walked into that hearing room.

The story has also resurfaced in the new Harper's (August 2005), in an article entitled "None Dare Call it Stolen: Ohio, the Election, and America's Servile Press" by Mark Crispin Miller.

There's a summary of the article on his blog:

www.markcrispinmiller.blogspot.com/

I haven't read the article yet because I just picked up the magazine this afternoon.

MCM is one of my favorite political commentators. Waaay back, during Gulf Slaughter 1, he lectured on the media propaganda effort in that conflict. It was so refreshing to see someone putting together the pieces when the whole country seemed to have plunged into fascist insanity (it was the first eruption of the yellow ribbon phenomenon, for those who don't remember).

He also wrote the "Bush Dyslexicon" and recently had a one-man show in NYC called "A Patriot Act," which went into great detail about the Dominionist influence on the neocons and the Republican party. I haven't read "Cruel and Unusual," but the cover is, well, see for yourself.

www.amazon.com/exec/obido...s&n=507846

"In this nation's epic struggle on behalf of freedom, reason and democracy, the press has unilaterally disarmed -- and therefore many good Americans, both liberal and conservative, have lost faith in the promise of self-government. That vast surrender is demoralizing, certainly, but if we face it, and endeavor to reverse it, it will not prove fatal. This democracy can survive a plot to highjack an election. What it cannot survive is our indifference to, or unawareness of, the evidence that such a plot has succeeded."

- final paragraph of Miller's piece in Harper's

Is Harper's considered mainstream, because that's spot-on for mainstream news?

A choice excerpt from the print article:

In the summer of 2003, Representative Peter King (Rl, N.Y.) was interviewed by Alexandra Pelosi at a barbecue on the White House lawn for her HBO documentary "Diary of a Political Tourist." "It's all over. The election's over. We won." King exulted more than a year before the election. When asked by Pelosi -- the daughter of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi -- how he knew that Bush would win, he answered: "It's all over but the counting. And we'll take care of the counting."

(p. 46)

Edited by: professorpan at: 7/28/05 10:05 pm
