I see that a conservative "Democrat" is running against the "leftist" Hillary in the New York primary. It strikes me odd that there could even possibly be any Dem in New York further right than than Hillary. As a matter of fact, both the Clintons have spent their political lives toward the "right of left". I'm thinking of NAFTA, for instance. I occurs to me that this whole maneuver could be part of a coordinated strategy between the two candidates, staged to make Hillary look less right-ish, so that she can play to the Dem base more convincingly, setting the groundwork for the 08 presidential primaries/caucuses. The way I see it, Hillary needs to have her cake and eat it, too, if she is going to make it in 08. This means that she needs to appeal to the red state voters, which she has been working very hard on since she became Senator, but in doing so has left herself vulnerable to attack from the usual Dem base, in particular the anti-war bloc. She may find that she is well-received by the middle voters overall of both parties, but unable to win the Dem nomination due to her stance on the war. What better way to manipulate perceptions than by creating an opponent who calls her too liberal?

www.rawstory.com/news/200..._0331.html

clip

"A conservative Democrat has decided to take on Hillary Clinton in the New York primary for her Senate seat, RAW STORY has found.

Mark Greenstein, a 42-year-old businessman is aiming to "take a stand against 'sellout' liberals" by facing off against the freshman Senator and former first lady.

"Greenstein acknowledged he had virtually no chance of defeating Clinton, who is popular in the state and has more than $17 million in the bank," the Associated Press reports.

The "former lawyer who now runs a chain of test-preparation centers" also issued a challenge to Senator Clinton to sign a pledge that, if elected, she will serve her full term in office, and not run - as many pundits speculate - for President in 2008.

At this moment, the Endorsements page at the Greenstein for Senate Web site doesn't list any endorsees at all.
