Censure petition

Postby chiggerbit » Thu Apr 06, 2006 11:01 am

Senator Harkin is sponsoring this petition in support of Russ Feingold's move to censure Bush. I just cannot believe there is so little Congressional support for censuring this man. Have the Congresspeople no idea that Bush is trampling all over their Constitutional powers, muddying those powers so badly that they are no longer recognizable? If they do not check his actions now, it will be too late when the man gets even more brazen.

Every signature counts. No, no, no - Harkin needs to be censured; the entire Bush administration needs to be impeached, arrested, indicted, prosecuted, and jailed. That would send a signal.

In fact, the following vote alone ought to see Harkin arrested as well: he voted (in 2002) to authorize the rape, death and plunder of the Iraqi people. He did it to cover the asses of presidential candidates Kerry, Edwards and Gephardt. Then he "regrets" it, then he backs Dean. Quite a foxtrot there. I don't buy it 'cuz Harkin has seen things and Harkin knows how things work and these things are planned in advance. He's a pro. He's entrenched. His allegiance is to the democratic party and that's it.

He also voted for the Patriot Act in 2001 and the National Intelligence Reform Act 2004 bill that established a National Intelligence Director and created a National Counter-terrorism Center. He voted yes to the Defense Department FY2005 Appropriations bill and yes to adopt the conference report that would provide more than $368 billion in funding for the Department of Defense (2003 Terrorism Information Awareness bill).

He gives the military-security state the tools and the funds they need and then scores political points (to enhearten the hapless progressive wing of the democrats) with some wrist-slapping of the handling of the events he helped set in motion.

That said...how can I NOT sign the petition, that being all there is in the way of official opposition? Maybe I can, as long as that is not the only thing I am doing...

Then why is he one of the few Senators going out on a limb on this? Is he so politically savvy that he sniffs the wind, realizes that this is the smart way to go? If so, why aren't other Senators getting on board? I don't get it.

Why is backing censure so far out on a limb when a majority of the country opposes Bush, the Republicans & the war in Iraq? I have seen polls showing a majority in favor impeachment of Bush (if proven he went to war on false pretenses). I am pretty sure his own constituency backs him. Harkin's had 4 terms in office. He's done well for himself. Rumours about a try for the governor's office once Vilsack vacates.

It is the politically saavy thing to do, but is NO threat to the status quo of power and money in DC.

Why are the rest of the Democrats not getting on board? I would be too kind to imply they are merely cowardly idiots. How can you fear Chris Matthews and Bill Oreilly when war crimes abroad and high crimes at home are being committed daily?

Perhaps censure now is a way to build up to impeachment in 2007 should the democrats retake congress. And so it goes.
