WTI Demands Bush And Blair Indictment At ICC
Tuesday, 2 August 2005, 12:54 pm
Press Release: World Tribunal on Iraq
World Tribunal On Iraq Demands Bush And Blair Indictment At International Criminal Court

1 August 2005, Istanbul, Turkey – The Final Statement by the Jury of Conscience of the World Tribunal on Iraq calls for the International Criminal Court (ICC) to indict, prosecute, and punish the perpetrators and collaborators for the aggression against Iraq and the related international crimes arising from the subsequent occupation of the country. The statement lists the violations in international law committed during and after this war and also provides recommendations for the prevention of future illegal and illegitimate action.

The Statement relies upon the extensive testimony given in written and oral form by international law experts during the Culminating Session of the World Tribunal on Iraq (WTI) in Istanbul between 23-27 June 2005. It also reflects the testimony and submissions on related issues of war crimes and the failure of the United Nations to protect Iraq against aggression.

The Chair of the Jury of Consience in Istanbul, Arundhati Roy, said in India “We, the Jury of Conscience, hope that the scope and specificity of these recommendations will lay the groundwork for a world whose future cannot be shaped by multi-national corporations and Heads of State in violation of the explicit and stated will of the people they claim to represent, where journalists and intellectuals will not remain mute, where human security will prevail over the drive for political, economic and cultural hegemony, the insatiable greed of the military-industrial complex and the quest for corporate profit.”

In the Istanbul session, members of the Jury of Conscience from 10 different countries heard the testimonies of 54 members comprising the Panel of Advocates who came from across the world, including Iraq, the United States and the United Kingdom. The session in Istanbul was the culminating session of commissions of inquiry and hearings held around the world over the past two years (1).

For more information and the full text of the Jury Statement please visit www.worldtribunal.org

www.scoop.co.nz/stories/W...S00041.htm

(...)

III. Recommendations

Recognizing the right of the Iraqi people to resist the illegal occupation of their country and to develop independent institutions, and affirming that the right to resist the occupation is the right to wage a struggle for self-determination, freedom, and independence as derived from the Charter of the United Nations, we the Jury of Conscience declare our solidarity with the people of Iraq.

We recommend:

1. The immediate and unconditional withdrawal of the Coalition forces from Iraq.

2. That Coalition governments make war reparations and pay compensation to Iraq for the humanitarian, economic, ecological, and cultural devastation they have caused by their illegal invasion and occupation.

3. Also, that countries provide conscientious objectors with political asylum.

9. That the international campaign for dismantling all US military bases abroad be reinforced.

10. That people around the world resist and reject any effort by any of their governments to provide material, logistical, or moral support to the occupation of Iraq.

We, the Jury of Conscience, hope that the scope and specificity of these recommendations will lay the groundwork for a world in which international institutions will be shaped and reshaped by the will of people and not by fear and self-interest, where journalists and intellectuals will not remain mute, where the will of the people of the world will be central, and human security will prevail over state security and corporate profits.

Arundhati Roy, India, Spokesperson of the Jury of Conscience
Ahmet Öztürk, Turkey
Ay?e Erzan, Turkey
Chandra Muzaffar, Malaysia
David Krieger, USA
Eve Ensler, USA
François Houtart, Belgium
Jae-Bok Kim, South Korea
Mehmet Tarhan, Turkey
Miguel Angel De Los Santos Cruz, Mexico
Murat Belge, Turkey
Rela Mazali, Israel
Salaam Al Jobourie, Iraq
Taty Almeida, Argentina

www.worldtribunal.org/main/?b=91

This group is important and they are going to the ICC. The ICC is probably going to tell them that they have no jurisdiction of the United States, but this could be the end for Blair. And it's like house of cards. If Blair falls then Bush can no longer maintain his grand posteur. In short, this is really good news.

World Tribunal Demands ICC Indictment of Iraq War Criminals

Postby Starman » Tue Aug 02, 2005 11:08 pm

I, Starman, of the Independant, Resourceful, Life-affirming, Peace and Justice-supporting, unincorporated State Of Jefferson do hereby solemnly and deliberately affirm and support this Petition of ICC Indictment of those implicated in planning, prosecuting, supporting, and carrying-out the Invasion and Occupation of Iraq which was a gross violation of Humanitarian Law constituting the most grevious Crime against Peace, and for those having prime responsibility for the many war crimes and atrocities which have since resulted.

I'd like to see a mass-public e-mail/fax campaign sending a brief letter of support for this demand to the world's leading political, spiritual and peace-justice officials (including UN, etc.), as well as the major media/press organizations; Somewhere I have a pretty comprehensive list of Media and UN and Congressional e-mail addys -- I should dig it up, or do another websearch and post it -- unless someone beats me to it and posts it here and on other vigorous discussion boards.

This is definitely something I could get behind.

Thanks for the Heads-UP!
A reassuring sign that all is NOT FUBAR with the world, but that pockets of light and sanity and decency and principle remain.

Hallelujah!
Starman

The World Tribunal can demand anything it wants... but it won't accomplish a thing at the ICC.

Millions of people across the world marched in the streets, wrote letters, and took out full page ads in the NYT -- and didn't stop the war. A "... horizontal network of local groups and individuals worldwide that work together in a non- hierarchical system" has about as much chance of indicting Bush and Blair as a snowball in Bagdhad.

I'm not being cynical, just honest. I applaud every group that works for peace, but trumpeting this as a major breakthrough ain't realistic.
