I don't think this is about discrediting the Internet, per se... Ken Lay's death, "timed" as it was, was just bound to elicit tons of conspiracy theories. Over at Wikipedia, very much so on DU, and even here.

Indeed, we should be quite pleased that nobody these days takes "the news" for granted anymore.

Speaking of DU, has anyone else noticed that when an exceptional news day is occuring they always seem to drag out their "DU NEEDS MODERATORS!" shtick and slap it on the home page..?
____________________
Oderint, dum metuant

Re: Ken Lay Dead, Sudden Massive Heart attack

Reminds me of a variation on an Alfred Hitchcock tv show. Lay's given a drug to make him comatose for the next few days. It makes him so close to death that it's enough to fool the one doctor who certifies him as dead. But a dummy carcass is prepared to be the actual one that's buried. Meanwhile, the feds suspect Lay may pull a stunt like faking his own death, so they stake out his home and anyone he knows to make sure he doesn't take off until they see him get buried. Suspecting they might do this, Lay will lay comatose pending the funeral and instead be buried with another dead man (in a funeral the same day but in a separate cemetary), only to have the old man "pastor" come and dig him up in the other cemetary that night, where the feds won't suspect he'll be.

So Lay wakes up in the coffin that night wondering where the pastor is to come dig him up, and flicks open his lighter to get a look at who's inside with him. And it's . . . the pastor!

Edited by: NewKid at: 7/6/06 1:09 am

the status of US v Lay

Because of the fact that he was awaiting sentencing and had filed for appeal prior to his death, his conviction has essentially been nullified.

www.chron.com/news/specials/enron/
www.chron.com/disp/story....27259.html

8<
Perhaps even more significant for the civil cases, once the case is vacated it's unlikely Lay's prior indictment and conviction could be used as evidence in any ensuing trials, Smith said.

"They would have the burden of proof to prove his guilt all over again," Smith said. agree with above: "the cause of death is coronary artery disease," is an unusual statement, especially when combined with the comment that lay had had a prior heart attack: what about any recent heart attack? coronary artery disease is of course very common...if the cause of death was in fact a large heart attack, the coroner should have said: "acute myocardial infarction" or words to that effect...

there are exceptions, but people who die of "massive heart attacks" are the ones who have not had good medical care up to that point, or are young and have not had time to develop collateral vessels in the heart.

kennie boy i'm sure had some pretty swank doc's looking after him, and even minor heart disease if he had it i'm sure was treated very aggressively. his doctor could come forward and tell this to us of course...if this was undiagnosed severe coronary artery disease i would be very surprised.

the other thing that's irritating here is the misconception that stress (even kennie boy's) is sufficient to lead someone's "heart to give out," -- sheer nonsense.

where is the scepticism of the media? why is this not a story, and some cheerleader missing in aruba is? i gotta get outta here....

"Death of Lay likely to protect his estate".

Headline in the Oregonian, 07/06/06

He faked it! It's just too convienent. The whole Enron team was so arrogant that they thought they could do anything they wanted, why not this? Skilling will get pardoned right before bush's term is ended.

Has anyone released toxicity screening results yet??? Medical doctors have been known to preside over lethal injections as well as torture.

The administration truly had a lot to lose with the information that Kenny Boy held on the Dear Leader. Commissioning private jets for the 2000 campaign, he knew where the bodies were buried and was probably willing to flip for some immunity. He was on the transition team and Cheney's energy manipulation cabal.

What better gift is there for Bush's birthday than a dose of potassium chloride through Lay's veins? I don't believe he's alive because too many ptb's need him dead.

And that's why I sense Abramoff is not long for this world...perhaps he'll be the victim of a freak accident.
