Any shadetree meteorologists in here?

Early this evening, around 5 pm, the sun was still well up in the sky, not even close to setting, and it was this unbelievable red color, and you could look right at it. There were no clouds either! I've never noticed it that way before. It was pretty cool, but I'm totally stumped how it could look so red, so high up in the sky. It was at least a third of the way up to high noon. By the time it set it was a bright orange; I couldn't look straight at it as it went over the horizon.

If the sun is red, it means that there is a huge amount of dust in the atmosphere. Normally you would only notice it near sunset, but sometimes when the atmosphere is very dusty it'll turn red before sunset.

dbase mentions the hazy humidity. It could play a role as well.
