If I were Hugh, "Soylent Green" would be an obvious attempt to scare people away from vegetarianism. "Soy", "lent"-il, "green".

Interesting, FB.

'A' for effort since you looked at the Book Cover Effect of the title to discern what is sanctioned.
(What year did that movie come out? Context is important.)

You just might be right. Wouldn't want people to stop eating beef and crappy corporate food, right? Just ask Oprah how powerful the beef industry is since she was nearly sued for dissing hamburgers when she heard about mad cow disease.

But there's more here than the title as important as that is.

The apocalyptic future movie genre seems to me to have the effect of making people think 'Whoa, guess I should be grateful for the status quo even with its failings because it could be so much worse. Thank goodness for what little I've got and Law and Order.'

This is what that movie about the assassination of W is meant to do. Those movie-makers specialize in making disaster scenarios real to elites so they can either finance a policy or...

The disaster genre also serves to diffuse dissatisfactions in the way that 'Roots,' an apocalyptic past movie, seemed to be about facing the abusive past of Africans brought to America as slaves but can also have a status-quo affirming effect by making people think 'Look how far we've come so the Black Panthers should be more patient.'

Another possibly-desired effect of not-enough-stuff-for-everyone disaster fantasies could be getting people to think in the same Machiavellian manner that the Overclass does like when NPR and PBS put on Wall Street investment shows and tell us what CEOs are up to to make the middle class identify with the elites who own them.

Re:Peak Food. This is serious, not a scam.

Global Warming has the potential to disrupt food production terribly and the Overclass's managers must be freaking out about widespread social instability scenarios.

Bet this has motivated many to be complicit with the PNAC vision of controlling the planet's resources with a police-state.
