GMO Foods: Benefit or Harm?

Thanks for posting this MK. I have been doing reading on this very topic. The Book "Seeds of Deception" by Jerry Smith goes into great detail about this threat to our health. Most European countries are on to this--they call GM Frankenfoods over there, because this company Monsanto has no idea what monsters they are unleashing on the public and have said as much: They don't feel it should be their responsibility to test the products. We should be the guinie pigs. Some scientists are beginning to feel that the sharp increases in food allergies and indigestion may be in part attributed to GM. They also say that the actual artificialy inserted DNA can get loose in our intestines and attach to the genes of the beneficial flora wrecking havoc with our guts. I have yet to see much on the real benefits of this stuff, except of course to the company which hopes to really rake it in after they let loose the terminator genetic modified seeds so that the farmers always have to come to them for seed crops. <p></p><i></i>

I have gluten intolerance, cannot tolerate wheat products, as well as many other gluten foods. So I am very concerned about genetic modification of foods. For me, the addition of a gluten gene to rice, for instance, would probably be a very big problem. And, as a gardener, I am aware of the "promiscuity" of many pollens. food intolerance

Something like that has already happened to me...I have been intolerant of the tomato family (nightshades) for quite sometime. Meanwhile, a few years ago I took up drinking soy milk. Well soy has had a nightshade gene from the tobacco plant added so that it is pest resistant. I got sick from the soy milk and my digestion still has not recovered. That was three years ago. I just watched a documentary, The Future of Food, about this very subject. I recommend it highly. I learned that corn is considered a pesticide now, because it has been modified to kill any insect that eats it. <br><br>Also, I read today that European countries may be forced to accept GM food. It was on the google news page today, but I don't have the link now.<br><br>On another food-related subject, someone at work was excited that she bought Orville Redenbacher kettle corn "with Splenda!" I cringed but said nothing. I've already sent her information and websites about the dangers of Splenda in particular, and all of these poisons in general. Yet I see people at work every day mixing up Crystal Lite and downing 5-6 diet sodas per day. They just look at me as if I were a crackpot when I tell them I don't touch that stuff.<br><br>My point is we have to be more vigilant as this crap gets into more and more foods. <br><br>I was at a meeting of journalists who write for a local independent paper last night and every one of them had trouble remembering names of people they wanted to feature in an article. Even the leader of the brainstorming session. I wondered how many of them drink diet sodas. <br><br>One day, I took a container of yogurt offered by a co-worker, and after I ate it, I realized it had 'sucralose," another name for Splenda. I freaked out. I could really tell that something was wrong with me that whole weekend. I felt anxious, shaky, and spacy. (More so than usual! ha)<br><br>It seems the more I preach against this crap, the more entrenched people's desire for artificial sweeteners becomes. I can't believe anyone would willingly swallow formic acid. I beg my mom not to use it, but she insists, since she's diabetic. Hell, this is what is CAUSING diabetes and obesity.<br><br>Oh, how it makes my blood boil knowing that this is a deliberate scheme to depopulate by slow death, with the side benefit of lining the pockets of doctors and hospitals as they treat the profound illnesses caused by Monsanto. And in the meantime, everyone grows more dumbed-down and docile.<br><br>sorry for the rant! I'm cranky today.<br><br><br><br> <p></p><i></i>

That was great col. crisp. Wish more of us would start ranting, because there really is "food wars" in place. The same companies putting the chemicals in our foods then profit when we become sick and have to take their drugs which also have many of the same chemicals. Donald Rumsfeld, deeply caring humanitarian and philanthropist (not) is personally responsible for ramming aspartame through the FDA into our food supply. <br> I went to a poetry slam last week. The poets were great and many were young, but almost all were obese. This is so sad to me because I know the food is making them fat. First they get fat and then they get sick. And they are blamed for not being able to control their "appetites" Their appetites no longer function the way nature intended because the chemicals destroy and cross the signals. They then spend their money on worthless diets fads and books trying to lose the weight. So much needless suffering to buy these bastards their mercedes benzes. Knowledge is power. We should all keep on trying to spread it. <p></p><i></i>

Five foods 'safe':<br><br>Bloody-Hell; That's just awful. Yet another horrific implication of the corporate scam being perpetrated on 'just us' folks, besides the insidious undermining of third-world economies and their food self-sufficiency -- ie., the public's apparant lack of rights to a safe food supply and inability to hold the agribusiness combines accountable for consequences. Isn't there ANY way to bring a massive class-action suit against the major GMO producers like Monsanto for not doing the most basic health tests or for failing to adequately identify and alert the public and properly label their genetically modified foodstuffs as potentially hazardous? Seems an aggressive money-hungry Law Firm would be keen to explore this opportunity -- but then the GOP's drive to eliminate 'frivolous lawsuits' plays right to protecting their core constituency -- while so-called International 'Free Trade' rules with prohibitive no-appeal 'fines' also institutionalizes corporate profitmaking immune to oversight, regulation and redress. What a corrupt rigged-game outrage!<br><br>Also: I didn't know there's concern re: DNA fragments loosely-bound in GMO foods can reattach to one's gut -- JaYsUS! Read labels. And distrust anything that is listed as "and other natural ingredients." Remember, radon is a "natural" radio-active substance. Fouride can be considered "natural." It's in bottled water such as Dasanti. What can be listed as such is FAR from being safe!<br><br>And yes, ANY form of fake sugar is poison. But then, so is "high-fructose corn syrup." And guess what, that's made from GMO corn!<br><br>But a real problem, and hard to avoid, is Monosodium Glutamate. It's in almost everything that those obese poets are eating. And our schoolkids' favorite snacks, such as Flamin' Hot Cheetos. Betcha can't eat just one! <!--EZCODE BOLD START--><strong>'Cause MSG is addictive.</strong><!--EZCODE BOLD END--> Salad dressing has LOTS of it AND that corn syrup in many cases.<br><br>I've planted my garden, the frost-hardy stuff such as lettuce and peas and broccoli... tomatoes are started in the house. Seed saving is a good idea. Did you know there used to be thousands of varieties of potatoes? But because humans focused on only a few varieties, when the potato blight hit, massive starvation followed. Yet, in South America where they still had more than a few kinds of potatoes, the people were not affected.
