Hotel California>>Iran-Contra?

Postby robertdreed » Sun Dec 18, 2005 4:54 pm

That would indeed be remarkable, considering that at the time that Hotel California was released, there was no Contra effort, Somoza was still in power in Nicaragua, the Shah was still in power in Iran, and, in point of fact, Gerald Ford was still the president of the United States.

Hotel California was released in 1976.

"The Last Resort" is a meditation on the history of the USA and the mythos of Manifest Destiny, the hunt for unspoiled places, the market for unspoiled places, the overrunning of unspoiled places, and their despoilation by people who think that the key to finding paradise has to do with the endless hunt for the next frontier, rather than taking responsibility for what's already settled and "civilized." The lyrics are fairly straightforward, I don't hear a lot of hidden innuendo in it.

Who know, maybe you were thinking of Glen Frey's "Smuggler's Blues"...

Probably "Hotel Cali" has Satanic imagery...

....because that's what it's about. Quacks like a duck and all. have it your way. The gist that I'm getting is "Don Henley worships the Devil."

When the term is applied as an accusation in popular English usage, "sophist" indicates the presence of an ulterior motive. Perhaps you can inform the RI board what you suppose comprises the motive for my "sophistry."

Edited by: robertdreed at: 12/18/05 8:39 pm

Henley hearts SATAN!

Postby professorpan » Mon Dec 19, 2005 12:29 am

Hotel California is probably my favorite Eagles song. I'm not a big fan of the band, but I have always liked the dark theme and the way it's written as a story -- the song reminds me of the creeping paranoia of films like Rosemary's Baby. "You can check out any time you like... but you can never leave."

Again, as I stated in the thread casting aspersions on Kubrick, we're talking about art -- not a journalistic depiction of reality. Sure, the song can be interpreted as having Satanic allusions, and it makes for interesting speculation... but so what?

It's a freaking song.

I hate the Eagles

Postby Col Quisp » Mon Dec 19, 2005 12:41 am

and so does the cabdriver in The Big Lebowski. I especially hate that noodling guitar in the middle. Yes, it's all just art. It's all crap.

Don Henley

Postby heyjt » Mon Dec 19, 2005 1:38 am

Woah...
I never eluded to Don Henley being a "Devil Worshiper"
-- But you can damned well be sure those guys knew people in their Hollywood Glits and Glam world that were.
I too enjoy the song's foreboding message.

art and life

Postby robertdreed » Mon Dec 19, 2005 3:14 am

"Yes, it's all just art. It's all crap."

I come from an older school than that. Art is important. But much of what gets tagged as "evil" is simply reportage. Artists look around, they have to look at everything. It's their job. Then they express what resonates the most with their experience. Some are all about wholesomeness, brightness, and sunniness. Others work a more eldritch and sinister beat. And the rest of us make of it what we will. Or not.

Your motive, rdr?

Postby banned » Mon Dec 19, 2005 3:37 am

I think you sometimes just enjoy making an argument that is...not sure what to call it...'non-obvious', and therefore difficult to make. I think you get satisfaction from applying your undeniable analytical skills to take on making an argument that presents a challenge. This is a wonderful skill, I guess my problem is that sometimes you seem more interested in making a tortured argument to pursuing the truth, which takes a back seat to your pride in the complexity of your argument.

I'm not sure that sophists have to have a hidden agenda beyond proving their own argumentation skills--freedictionary.com gives the following definitions:
small s sophist:
a. One skilled in elaborate and devious argumentation.

capital S Sophist:

Any of a group of professional fifth-century b.c. Greek philosophers and teachers who speculated on theology, metaphysics, and the sciences, and who were later characterized by Plato as superficial manipulators of rhetoric and dialectic.

I have to admit that arguing that lines that clearly refer to Satanic rituals actually don't is a fun challenge. I just re-read the lyrics and some other web pages and I have to say the line about wine and 'spirit' could well refer to the Communion wine and represent the Holy Spirit having been absent since 1969.

Whatever it was intended to be about clearly many people find it evokes images consistent with a Satanic cult.

By the way, when I came back to the Bay Area after living in Michigan for a year, I stayed for a week at the Hotel California in Palo Alto. Boy, were they tired of jokes about check-out time.

Art vs. Crap

Postby Col Quisp » Mon Dec 19, 2005 1:13 pm

RDR: I was being sarcastic when I said all art is crap. I know, it wasn't very good sarcasm. Sorry!

And I was wrong about the cabdriver in The Big Lebowski. It's the cabdriver who loves the Eagles. Lebowski hates them and asks that the driver turn off the Hotel California from the radio. The driver refuses and throws Lebowski out of the cab in the middle of nowhere.

Edited by: Col Quisp at: 12/19/05 10:15 am
