Awesome art, love R. Crumb. Incredible story. I'll have to revisit PKD's writings.

Dick doth provide more than a few trinkets of relevance to the weirdness studied in this forum:

1). Dick was got to by Maitreya and his agents? See last page, last panel:

www.philipkdickfans.com/w...eirdo8.htm

So the prophet Elijah enters Dick's world after his "religious experience" with the flaming fish, taking Dick in an altered-state to the middle east, murmuring to him in a feminine voice that "Christ" has returned and is ready to save us from the new roman persecutors; there is also a beheading theme ("I was in a roman dungeon, and they came and cut off my head, took a wire and garroted me..."); and then at his death, he tapped the Maitreya as the likely candidate for the returned Christ.

2). Re: Flow my Tears (on my 'to read' list), Dick describes this novel as his remembrance of a horrid police state which once existed, a reality/universe which is running in parallel with with our own sensed reality, ever-threatening to bleed over, take over again. He saw himself as one of the "secret Christians" who helped overthrow that state.

He discusses all this in a speech delivered at the second Festival International de la Science-Fiction de Metz, France, in September 1977:

"If You Find This World Bad, You Should See Some of the Others"
www.greylodge.org/occultr..._world.htm

Dick speaks of a Programmer who

Quote:
First and foremost... controls the objects, processes, and events in our space-time world...I have spoken of myself as a reprogrammed variable, and I have spoken of him as the Programmer and Reprogrammer. The buzzing thing again...have you ever been in a room full of charismatic christians all chanting/speaking in "tongues" together? I read a story somewhere about Philip Dick as a student in high school. He was taking a physics exam and a voice (I suppose it was an AI voice as in his book VALIS) was giving him the answers. There was no mention as to whether those answers were correct.

Re: roman empire

Postby thrulookingglass » Thu Feb 16, 2006 5:57 pm

I was curious about PKD's recurring claims that the Roman Empire had never ended. Is there historical evidence that someone could site that shows some measure of the Roman Empire staying in power, but hidden? Or do you think it's metaphorical, the US imperial empire being much like that of the Romans?

The name "Maitreya" is not new. I don't know enough about PKD to say exactly what context he used it in. But the name itself is from Buddhist eschatology, and like many eschatological ideas, its roots are possibly Zoroastrian.

Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maitreya

Rael of the Raelians has also decared himself the Maitreya. Don't forget H.H. Jetsun Gyalwa Jampa , Lama Dorje, the Tulku Budhha Maitreya of the The Church of Shambhala Vajradhara Maitreya Sangha

www.tibetanfoundation.org/

Why does he look like a South Park cut and paste?

Open the site, turn on your computer's sound, wait a sec, and make sure to listen to his spiel (at least some of it, if you can) delivered in a monotone, retentive US accent over background chanting which sounds eerily like the droning in the secret masked ritual scene in Eyes Wide Shut.

***

On edit: Creme and Share were operating in the 70's so there could have been overlap with Dick, but more likely he was referring to the more historical version of Maitreya. Dick meant Creme's Maitreya, but

At his most lucid, Dick could safely hold both the paranoia and the scepticism in his mind simultaneously. Oddly, in Carrere's account, it seems that he was able to do something similar even when at his most crazy. In his last interview, he told a journalist of his latest enthusiasm - Benjamin Creme, a New Age guru - but then, once the tape was turned off, he decided that Creme was all nonsense. In this mode, the contradiction was dangerous, its very existence further evidence of the desperate instability of any world-view.

newstatesman

Creme is mentioned by name here:

www.alphane.com/moon/Palm...nfield.htm

Quote:
Phil Dick's V.A.L.I.S. ("Vast Active Living Intelligence System") seemed a suitable point of departure. The phrase value of the complete term VAST ACTIVE LIVING INTELLIGENCE SYSTEM = 515 = I AM LIFE AND THE GIVER OF LIFE OF EVERY STAR, a most suggestive phrase considering that VALIS is supposed to be a kind of god-computer capable of transmitting meaningful, transformative messages to Earth. The acronym VALIS = 41 = HER (repeated many times), but also = WHOLE. In the VALIS story, a magical child is created as a messiah. The child is female. Phil Dick died at age 54 [actually he was 53 - ed.] during the filming of Blade Runner based (very loosely) on his anti-machine novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? In his last year he became a follower of Benjamin Creme and maintained that his earlier works of fiction - allegory, really - contained a sort of cipher. The last of his novels published in his lifetime, The Divine Invasion, dealt with this theme from a gnostic religious vantage point. He maintained that the phrase "King Felix" was a cipher for the coming of a New Being, who would deliver humanity from the "black iron prison." KING FELIX = 147 = RESISTANCE.

Of course, it's possible that Greenfield just arrived at that conclusion himself based on speculation.

-- edit --

I guess Jeff's post just proved that he wasn't speculating.

Edited by: thoughtographer at: 2/17/06 9:54 am

....but then, once the tape was turned off, he decided that Creme was all nonsense.

I can relate to that - often I'll say or adopt something, or post it, and then change my mind about what I had just said, or espoused. But what I say on or off the record has zero significance. And I am certainly not as versatile as Dick's inner trickster in negotiating parallel universi. I am probably just more confused. Anyway, should Dick's being on or off the record about Creme's Maitreya be of any significance to this thread (or to the world)?

on edit: removing annoying punctuation bugs

Edited by: Gouda at: 2/17/06 11:21 am
