serial killers and their religion

Postby BuckB1970 » Sun Apr 16, 2006 6:11 pm

I was wondering if there is anyone out there that could help me and a friend with a little project we have going. I work at a university located in the Midwest of the U.S. and this week is "Jesus Week". My friend and I have a plan to make t-shirts highlighting the black underbelly of Christianity and one of them is a shirt with serial killers and their religious affiliations. Of course we want to focus of the christians mostly, but we are also interested in whatever religion these cretins are affiliatted. If anyone out there knows of a site or page with lists this type of information we would greatly appreciate it.

I am a committed atheist but I am also tolerant of any persons belief systems, in so far as they do not use them to justify reprehensible behavior. Unfortunately our christian and muslim brothers and sisters have used their faiths of late to legitimize any number of terrible acts. It is up to atheists, muslims, christians, and jews to confront the less tolerant of these religious sects and let them know that in a civilized society we have to not only tolerate other beliefs but encourage understanding of our own. Making a t-shirt with a listing of christian serial killers on it may not seem to be a step in this direction, but if you lived in the state I do you would understand that the radical religious right needs to have it's dirty laundry aired for all to see in order to keep them from indoctrinating even more unsuspecting, well-intentioned people into the fold of religious bigots. Once again any help would be appreciated and we'll even post pictures of the shirts, if anyone cares. Thanks and I look forward to any and all responses.

There are tons of compilations about murderers, including serial murderers, in the "True Crime" section of bookstores and libraries. I've read several of them.

Lets just say that they've gone over to the "dark side of the Force", to the extent that there's a predominant religious proclivity. But religious delusions oftendon't seem to figure very heavily, for most of them. It's a straight-up predatory drive-desire thing, no mysticism about it.

According to the attorney who prosecuted the case, Manson believed (or at least preached to his followers) that their actions were foretold in the the Revelation of John the Divine. He also mixed in the Beatles, and (reported, but apparently unrecognized by the prosecutor) the Hopi belief in the third and fourth worlds, so that it would be something of a stretch to call him a Christian.

www.francesfarmersrevenge.../index.htm is messily laid out and of uneven quality, but has a lot of useful capsule summaries of various serial killers and their motives, to the extent that they can be known. Be sure not to miss the "art" and "writings" sections, linked from the top right.

-Sepka the Space Weasel
