Mockingbird media and religious scandals

I was thinking about Bush I and the PTL scandal. Consider this:

1986:

<ahref="FROM">">FROM CRUSADE TO CAMPAIGN IN MICHIGAN
By PHIL GAILEY

WHAT began in Michigan as the first test of strength between Vice President Bush and Representative Jack F. Kemp of New York is now being closely watched for another, at least as significant result: the ability of the Rev. Pat Robertson to mobilize thousands of evangelical Christians as a statewide political force. If his drive here is successful, it could have major implications not only for the 1988 Presidential race but for the future of the Republican Party. The religious right, increasingly at odds with local Republican establishments, has made political breakthroughs in Minnesota and other states with far less of an effort than is being made here by followers of Mr. Robertson, a television evangelist from Virginia Beach, Va., who says the Michigan outcome will be weighed heavily in his decision on whether to seek the Presidency. Unlike Mr. Bush and Mr. Kemp, who have delivered mostly pep talks to groups of party regulars, Mr. Robertson is trying to pull conservatives in both parties, as well as independents, into his tent. His preachings against abortion and pornography, coupled with his call for school prayer, have been bringing large audiences throughout the state to their feet.

March 1987:

PTL scandal breaks

Interesting timing.

Now jump to 2004. The religious right, now part of “the base” is seemingly protected – i.e. not to be disrupted. A potential scandal involving TBN’s Paul Crouch, which could easily dwarf Jim and Tammy’s is reported by a major newspaper but fails to become a national “agenda item.”

From the LA Times:
After checking out of the hotel, Ford said, Crouch took him to a TBN-owned cabin near Lake Arrowhead. It was there, Ford said, that Crouch first had sex with him. "I did it because I didn't know if this man is going to throw me straight out of that cabin," Ford said. "And I didn't want to lose my job. I was going to be in trouble if I said no."

More here:

Stuff on youtube if you search “tbn” and “Crouch.”

But my point is, you have to seek it out. It’s not on the cover of Newsweek.

Why wasn’t this as big as Jim and Tammy? The Bakkers weren’t household names before their scandal. TBN is much bigger than the PTL network. Plus Paul’s deal could have pushed a lot of buttons and sold a lot of papers – it’s gay, it’s interracial, involves hush money…

But now in the Fall of 2006 the Mockingbird media seems to be shifting their agenda again with respect to the religious base -- Tucker Carlson, David Kuo…

Maybe Paul was lucky that his scandal broke when it did.
