The Most Amazing Experience of My Life

Postby GDN01 » Sun Aug 14, 2005 9:18 pm

I just returned home from a weekend at Camp Casey. I am so overwhelmed with emotion that I don't know what to say. I slept there two nights and was able to be actively involved with the camp.

The high point of the weekend was the moment that a caravan of cars began making their way along the winding road leading to Camp Casey after the Peace Rally on Saturday afternoon, held in Crawford. I was standing on the road side, waving a huge flag with a peace symbol on it, waiting to welcome the new arrivals at the camp. As the first car reached the camp, I looked back up the hill, and as far as I could see, the cars were lined up, bumper to bumper, making their way to the place Cindy Sheehan has taken her stand for peace and truth. All of us who had stayed at the camp to assist with the coordination of this influx of people were not expecting this. I don't know what we expected, but it wasn't 500 cars lined up, inching their way up the road to Camp Casey, cars as far as we could see, for nearly an hour. Every time I looked down that road and saw all the cars, tears would stream down my face and I could barely choke out the words, "Welcome to Camp Casey, we are so glad you're here!"

Cindy Sheehan is an amazing woman. She speaks from the heart and she speaks the truth. She has started something here. She has reminded the people of this country that WE have the power.

There is so much more I want to share with you all. Pictures, stories, memories. I met so many wonderful people. I need to upload my pics and take a shower - it was truly "roughing it" to stay at the camp! I've hardly slept since Friday. But I'll leave you with the words Cindy and I exchanged Friday evening, when I met her at the Peace House in Crawford.

I introduced myself to Cindy and said, "I have a son who just turned 15 this week. I don't...." and I couldn't finish the sentence because I was holding back my tears. So, Cindy finished it for me, "I don't want your son to have to die in a war either." I nodded and replied, "I'm so sorry this happened. I tried so hard before the war began, I did everything I could to protest, trying to prevent it." Cindy stood up off the couch where she was sitting and hugged me and said, "Thank you. Thank you for trying to save my son's life. And I will do everything I can to save your son's life. We have to stop this war."

As I write, GDNO1, tears are streaming down my face.. what you wrote is so beautiful.. I am also allowing myself to hope, to pray for peace, for justice, for truth. I am so tired of the bitterness, the hate, the lies, death, corruption, the downright evil. I WANT A BETTER WORLD! Cindy Sheehan has allowed me that hope; God bless her and all of her efforts. She has lit a torch that will not be extinguished, at least in my mind, until every last peace loving human on this earth is gone- and that will never happen. We each owe it to one another to make sure that none of our sons or our neighbors sons have to die in this God FORSAKEN war. We ARE our brothers keeper.
Peace and Love to all
Sonya

Edited by: sunny at: 8/14/05 7:42 pm

Cindy as the Rosa Parks of our time

Postby sunny » Sun Aug 14, 2005 9:56 pm

A lovely article-

www.commondreams.org/views05/0814-23.htm

Published on Sunday, August 14, 2005 by the Press & Sun-Bulletin (Binghamton, New York)
Sometimes, One Woman is All it Takes
By David Rossie

Someday, when the account of this sorry period in American history is recorded, Cindy Sheehan may be recalled in the same way we recall that lonely Chinese man who stood before a tank near Beijing's Tiananmen Square in 1989.

We do not know what happened to that brave man. He may have been among the 10,000 or so dissidents arrested in the wake of the demonstrations, and he may even have been one of those executed.

This is not meant to diminish his courageous act. Nor is it meant to exaggerate the significance of Mrs. Sheehan's effort to confront George Bush over the war that his handlers have led us into. No one is about to cart her off to prison or a firing squad.

It is simply to point out that a single act of courage and determination can come to define a larger issue. Last Saturday, Mrs. Sheehan set up a roadside camp near Bush's ranch, which is now known as Prairie Chapel (The man truly has no shame), and vowed to remain there until Bush agreed to meet with her and answer questions about the war that has claimed the life of her son, Casey, and more than 1,800 others.

In the week since, she has become a magnet for other antiwar activists and, perhaps as important, she has forced a gutless White House press corps to confront an issue it can no longer ignore: that a majority of Americans are rapidly losing faith in the scoundrels who lied us into a war with no coherent strategy for ending it.

Bush administration spinners were quick to point out that the president had already met with Mrs. Sheehan and others who had lost sons, daughters and spouses, but Mrs. Sheehan says it was the very nature of that meeting that prompted her newfound activism.

Bush did not know her son's name, she said. What is more, she added, Bush behaved as if he were at a party, and kept calling her "Mom."

I've heard it said that this is one more example of Bush's stupidity. But he's not stupid. Ignorant? Yes. Insensitive? Absolutely. But not stupid. In fact he's quite clever; clever enough to persuade a good segment of the public, including the news media, that his arrogance is actually resolve.

It has been suggested that Bush could make the growing Sheehan problem go away simply by strolling down the road to talk to her, or by inviting her into the ranch -- I'm sorry, chapel -- for a chat. By so doing he'd turn an embarrassment into a public relations coup.

But that is unlikely to happen, for two reasons. One, he is incapable of embarrassment and, two, because if he were to answer Mrs. Sheehan's questions, it would be seen as being called to account, something he has managed to avoid for most of his life.

This is a man who has been bailed out of every tight spot he's found himself in by Daddy or Daddy's friends; a man who has never felt the need to explain, let along apologize, for anything.

So Mrs. Sheehan appears to be in for a long, hot August, with little likelihood of achieving her goal. But then, as someone pointed out, Rosa Parks didn't know what she was setting in motion that day when she refused to give up her seat on the bus.

Isn't it interesting that it is women, from Joan of Arc to Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony to Rosa Parks and now Cindy Sheehan, who have given impetus to great movements.

Rossie is associate editor of the Press & Sun-Bulletin; his column appears on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday. Write to him c/o P.O. Box 1270, Binghamton, N.Y. 13902-1270.

© 2005 Press & Sun-Bulletin

###

She will never be happy

Postby Norman Miller » Mon Aug 15, 2005 12:38 am

I feel for her loss, but I fail to see what she thinks she will accomplish. Even if the President saw her, she would not be satisified with any answer that he gives her. They could pull out top secret data and show it to her and it still would not be enough. She is only doing it so she can get inside, talk with him and then come out and make up an assortment of accusations. President Bush could be the nicest person on the planet and she will still demonize him after the meeting. I feel she has become a "patsy" for the democratic party. After all, that is what the real goal is here. Just to embarrass, not to get an "real" answer.

Norman

<a href="http://weirdevents.blogspot.com ">weirdevents.blogspot.com

I will politely disagree with you Norman. She is not being used by anyone. Have you spoken with her? Have you been to Crawford?

She is speaking for herself. She wants to know why our President lied to start a war. Here are her words and her message:
I'm angry because every reason the Bush administration gave for the invasion of Iraq has been shown to be false.

The 9/11 Commission Report concluded there was no link between Iraq and the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

The weapons inspectors gave up searching for WMDs and wrote in the Duelfer report that there were none to be found.

From the Downing Street Memo, we learned that the Bush administration "fixed" intelligence to justify the Iraq invasion.

The only one embarrassing the current administration is George Bush.
