Scowcroft: "Dick Cheney I don't know anymore"

Postby Qutb » Tue Oct 25, 2005 7:45 am

By Glenn Kessler
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, October 25, 2005; A03

The alleged leaking of a CIA operative's name had its roots in a clash over Iraq policy between White House insiders and their rivals in the permanent bureaucracy of Washington, especially in the State Department and the CIA.

As the investigation into the leak reaches its expected climax this week with the expiration of the grand jury's term, the internal disputes have been further amplified by a recent string of speeches and interviews criticizing the administration's handling of Iraq, including by former national security adviser Brent Scowcroft, the former chief of staff to Secretary of State Colin L. Powell and State Department diplomats, and other officials involved in the early efforts to stabilize Iraq.

Scowcroft, a close friend of former president George H.W. Bush, revealed in interviews with the New Yorker a deep disdain for the administration's foreign policy, according to an article published this week. He said he had once considered Vice President Cheney "a good friend," but "Dick Cheney I don't know anymore." When Scowcroft was asked whether he could name the issues on which he agreed with President Bush, he replied "Afghanistan." He then paused for 12 seconds before adding only, "I think we're doing well on Europe."

(...)

Scowcroft, in his interview, discussed an argument over Iraq he had two years ago with Condoleezza Rice, then-national security adviser and current secretary of state. "She says we're going to democratize Iraq, and I said, 'Condi, you're not going to democratize Iraq,' and she said, 'You know, you're just stuck in the old days,' and she comes back to this thing that we've tolerated an autocratic Middle East for fifty years and so on and so forth," he said. The article stated that with a "barely perceptible note of satisfaction," Scowcroft added: "But we've had fifty years of peace."

Scowcroft also dismissed former deputy secretary of defense Paul D. Wolfowitz, the intellectual godfather of the Iraq invasion. "He's got a utopia out there. We're going to transform the Middle East, and then there won't be war anymore. He can make them democratic," Scowcroft said. "Paul's idealism sweeps away doubts," he added.

Washington Post

---------------

The neocons, having outlived their usefulness, being discarded by the real PTB? Or did the "Cheney/Rumsfeld cabal" really hijack American foreign policy? Is Wolfowitz really a naive idealist who desperately wants to bring democracy and freedom to the poor oppressed peoples of the world? We report, you decide.

Brent Scowcroft is of course the chairman of the American Turkish Council, Sibel Edmond's "semi-legitimate organization", involved in illicit trade in drugs, weapons and nuclear weapons components.
Qutb means "axis," "pole," "the center," which contains the periphery or is present in it. Umm... maybe Cheney's a clone?

No, really, I hope they're all about to get dumped, but then we're likely to face the old "Meet the new boss... Same as the old boss..." --MaryK

It's variation on good cop/bad cop

Postby maggrwaggr » Tue Oct 25, 2005 10:54 pm

The Republicans know that Bushco is a lost cause, and that the Republicans are in danger of losing power altogether because of the stench of the sinking rotting ship of Bushco.

So some of the old-timers are going into damage-control mode to paint the Bush administration, especially the serious leaders of it (Cheney, Wolfowitz, etc) as bad apples.

I expected this to happen much sooner, but those guys stick together like glue.

You'll see a lot more "distancing" of republicans from the current administration in the days and weeks to come.

By 2006 they'll all be trying desperately to rewrite history to show that they never REALLY supported Bushco.

Fucking liars, all of them.

maryk, I fear you are right. Same asshole, different suit. Or the way they all do the grey suit/blue tie thing, same suit too. Just different name.

To get somebody different is going to require a revolution. Sorry, I didn't want to believe that myself in the early '70s but I'm 30 years older, a lot sadder, hopefully wiser, and that's just the way it's got to be.

mags, you're right, but as I said over on the other thread, they can only get away with it if no one CHALLENGES them and says "Yoo hoo, you went along with these fuckers till they started to stink."

Although actually in fairness to Scowcroft, I believe he came out against invading Iraq BEFORE the invasion and has never changed his mind--I remember him talking about how the Bush I crowd knew it would be a big mistake which is why they didn't do it.

The bastards we need to to take hammers to the balls of and make them confess their crimes and promise to repent or clean out their desks in 2006/8 are the Dumbos who voted for the war and voted for the USAPATOOTIE Act and the bankruptcy bill and the energy bill and all those other BushCo-trocities.

When the rats head down the rope from the sinking burning ship, we need to bar the way like Michael at the gates of Paradise and say "Back, you rat bastards, you bought your ticket, you're going down with this sucker."

If "we the people" don't do this, shame on us.

They both sat on the American Turkish Council. As Wilson said in his book:
We fell into an easy relationship and would banter back and forth about the new administration and its predecessors. After board meetings or other events, we'd often Metro back across town together. As the obsession with Iraq overtook many influential members of the Bush administration, our conversations turned frequently to the emerging debate on Iraq and the merits of the approach being advanced by the prowar crowd.
Hallo! Wilson would pal around with Poppy's best friend and trash Junior. Then Scowcroft publicly called Junior out:"

Another old connection of Scowcroft's: Richard Clarke, the former "terrorism czar", who was fired from James Baker's State Dept. in 1992 after having "turned a blind eye" on Israel's sale of US weapons to China. He was soon thereafter hired by Scowcroft to a job in the National Security Council.
Qutb means "axis," "pole," "the center," which contains the periphery or is present in it.
