Thought I would post this from the comments section of FDL, as it seems not only possible, but likely. (links are mine)

____________________________________________________

Talking on the phone with my son this evening, I had a sudden and frightening epiphany (in the Joycean sense). I've long been thinking that if this administration throws out the Constitution, then they also throw out the compact that enabled the Union. What is to keep certain blue states from declaring independence?

My son said, that would mean civil war.

Suddenly I realized that Rumsfeld has been replacing all the generals (www.cbsnews.com/stories/2...hp?id=754) who show any spine with more complaisant officers. Worse, he has been sending National Guard units to Iraq to fight the war and making many of them return without their equipment. Could this be deliberate? National Guard units return home battle weary and undereguipped, unprepared for mobilization in an emergency. www.dailysouthtown.com/so...010nd8.htm

Is a military victory in Iraq the ultimate goal, or is the ultimate military goal far more sinister than we ever imagined? Mrs. K8, everyone, tell me I've gone overboard in my paranoia.

I would hope that troops would not turn on their own people, but becoming inured to torture and urban warfare is not good practice for civil disobedience.

After having the above thought, the James Moore story sends chills down my spine.
notjonathon | 01.05.06 - 7:37 am |

Edited by: sunny at: 1/5/06 12:27 pm
