Don’t you have to love this – “A Short Guide to Iraq” published by the War and Navy Departments in WWII.

Way too bad that no one thought to read this book prior to invading Iraq. Some bon mots:

“Above all, use common sense on all occasions. And remember that every American soldier is an unofficial ambassador of good will.”

“That tall man…….is a first-class fighting man, highly skilled in guerilla warfare. Few fighters in any country, in fact, excel him in that kind of situation. If he is your friend, he can be a staunch and valuable ally. If he should happen to be your enemy – look out!”

“But you will also find out quickly that the Iraqi is one of the most cheerful and friendly people in the world.”

“Although relatively few Iraqis receive a formal education similar to yours, they are shrewd and intelligent and tend to believe what they hear and see with their own ears and eyes. By what you do and how you act you can do a lot to win this war and the peace after it.”

“Respect his religion as he will respect yours.”

“Avoid offering opinions on internal politics.”

digitallibrary.smu.edu/cu.../w0025.pdf
