thanks for posting this, professor pan. the clarity and force with which this man speaks is very real; he has clearly achieved a higher moral plane than most in this country, and for this he is attacked and ridiculed, instead of praised. i missed this on TV, but the visual picture of this man conversing with CNN's soledad is like a ghandi-figure next to some primitive invertebrate creature: a giant evolutionary gap. whatever the circumstances (I too think the beheading video suspicious for being staged -- remember that white plastic chair that turns up also in the notorious abu ghraib pics, and the lack of blood, etc.), this man did lose his son under horrifying circumstances, and he is simply above revenge. no doubt this throws a wrench into the moral algorithms of millions in this country, land of the death penalty, etc, etc...and again the disappointment: instead of being inspired by this man, they try to take him down. moddey

I made a very long post discussing last night elaborating on the beheading videos and my observations about them, the timeframe they appeared in, and what was happening here while they occurred, but I lost it as post data when I forgot to log in.. These videos are SAVAGE Black Propaganda the likes of which I have never seen in my entire life; grisly, slow, detailed, and absolutely horrifying in the sheer brutality of the act itself. They also have virtually nothing in common with the Berg video whatsoever. It was like watching a manikin. The lack of blood, the lack of reaction, the actual sounds which I'm unfortunately very familiar with now, everything, the posturing of the men themselves; the way they appeared as American caucasians emulating a rap hero with their stances.. All of it screams of the West.

Michael Berg was on Ed Schultz the other day, too, which was a really interesting interview. Big Ed--an interesting character on the scene. I'm never quite sure what to make of him, since sometimes he seems positively retrogressive and at other times I think he may just save the Democrats. At any rate, he seemed respectful of Mr. Berg but didn't know how to respond when he said "George Bush killed my son. George Bush is a terrorist." Big Ed just kind of ignored these extremely provocative statements. He kept asking Mr. Berg what should have been done to Mr. Z to obtain justice for his son's killing. Berg did a little hemming and hawing, realizing that what he was going to suggest would seem pretty weird, I guess. But finally he said that what he would have liked to have seen was an example of "restorative justice" vs. "retributive justice," which is what happened. I loved this notion. Anyway, he wanted Mr. Z (can't ever remember how to spell it, sorry) to do something like work in a hospital attending to children who have been injured by violence. He felt this would change Mr. Z on a fundamental level, essentially restoring his soul. He's very much a 60s idealist--or at least that's how he appears. I have extreme doubts about Nick Berg--c'mon, he just happened to have given his, what was it, college computer account password to one of the hijackers, years before 9/11? Something like that, I'm fuzzy on the details at this point. Can someone set me straight? My problem with Michael Berg is that he obviously has identified the man in the video as his son and doesn't seem to question the video's authenticity. He said on Ed Schultz that he had been forced to view the video against his will--that he didn't want to see it (and who could blame him?) and had previously avoided it. He didn't say how this happened or who forced him, BTW. At any rate, he saw the video and obviously is still saying that it's Nick, that it happened as it appeared, although he does say that he doubts it was Mr. Z in the video. I have a feeling it's all part of the Great Game, but it's really hard to identify the players in this case--and the pawns. So is M. Berg also on payroll? I don't know.
