And the building remained standing. For many people today, this disaster foreshadows the chilling events of September 11, 2001. But in 1945, many things were different. Human error, not hatred, caused the disaster. In the low fog, the pilot became disoriented and crashed into the 78th and 79th floors of the Empire State. Luckily, because it was Saturday, only 1,500 out of the average 10,000 workers were in the building.
