It didn't take long

To America's leaders in 1812, an invasion of Canada seemed to be "a mere matter of marching," as Thomas Jefferson confidently predicted. How could a nation of 8 million fail to subdue a struggling colony of 300,000? Yet, when the campaign of 1812 ended, the only Americans left on Canadian soil were prisoners of war. Three American armies had been forced to surrender, and the British were in control of all of Michigan Territory and much of Indiana and Ohio.

www.amazon.com/exec/obido...1?v=glance

Polk Declares War on Mexico, 1846
historicaltextarchive.com...&artid=476

I wasn't blaming Sharon in that thread. However, both were crooks and warmongers. Jefferson owned and sexually abused slaves, not sure about Sharon on that score.

Edited by: eric144 at: 11/7/05 5:41 pm

worse than republican

Postby eric144 » Mon Nov 07, 2005 9:14 pm

I'm British and haven't tried to hide it in any way. I'm (very slightly) winding you up because you haven't noticed.

I studied American history to discover the roots of the nightmare we have today and I believe it started with the Declaration of Independence, the original draft of which contained a rant against slavery despite the fact that Jefferson, Adams, Washington and most of the American leadership bought and sold human beings and their 'enemy' Lord North the British prime minister was not a slave owner.

The anti-slavery clauses originally included by Jefferson – himself a slave-owner – were omitted to spare the feelings of the Southern states, though the section that denounced the King’s dealings with “merciless Indian Savages” was left in.

www.pacificislandtravel.c...ution.html

That's just one thing.

Edited by: eric144 at: 11/7/05 6:17 pm

i'm glad i can stop worrying that you are part of the american "left" which keeps shooting itself in the foot. i can talk to a republican who loves what is good about america and who is just badly misinformed, better than to a "leftie" who has been duped into hating all things american. i didn't know you were English. i don't get to all threads by any means.

I'm Scottish actually and I do hate most things American apart from the Ramones and Bob Dylan. In particular I hate nasty corporate culture and nasty American corprations and their monopolistic ways backed by espionage.

Do you really believe America has turned out better than Canada ?

Edited by: eric144 at: 11/7/05 6:42 pm

I don’t know with whom you would gather these experiences that would lead you to such a conclusion that leftists hate “all things American”. I thought one of the principles of those of us at RI was to repudiate such broad stereotypes. Though, this board seems a dysfunctional as common society itself. If I had to be painted into a corner, which I do not think is appropriate especially regarding forms of political thought, I would have to count myself as a leftist. Unfortunately, I do not fit into your typecast group in hating all things American. I know many a union sheet-metal worker, electricians, pipe fitters that pride themselves in buying and supporting American business despite the current political climate that would dissolve what they have fought so long to establish. “Hate all things American”? Is that a quote from Limbaugh?! There are many a thing I love and yes, hate about this country. Moreover, I seek to understand my fellow American before tossing his/her political rationalizations to the wind. Is torture American? Illegal wars? Stolen elections? I suppose if we study our “parahistory” well enough, these would seem as ideals supported by the government of America, but as ideals, they are in stark contrast to values that most of us would consider “American”. Can we move away from typecasting on this board? Does anyone fit into these oversimplifying terms of democrat, republican, centrist, leftist? These terms are used to subvert understanding and promote partiality. I’m sorry that this may sound like a personal tirade and a flame of a post, but I felt insulted by the insinuation, to put it simply, it got under my skin.

Edited by: thrulookingglass at: 11/8/05 3:21 pm

I don't know if the characterization 'leftists hate everything American' was really being directed to a certain poster or said as a sweeping generalization, but as a stereotype I sure object to it and disagree.

I am critical of the PTB and the corporate/special interest elites through history, and the propaganda, duplicity, lies, disinfo and myths used to create and manipulate public opinion. I strongly support the search for Truth and context as critical to our wise living and informed decision-making, especially in a political context.

As anti-Rightwing, I'm not ashamed to have 'Leftist' and Liberal sensibilities -- although I don't identitfy or think of myself as a Leftist. But the generalization that 'Lefties' hate everything *American* is BS, the kinda thing I'd expect Limbaugh and Hannity et al. to spout.

But really, what IS or ARE 'things' *American*, anyway?
Slavery, powerful special interests, corrupt Republican and Democratic parties, Black Ops and political intrigue including political assassinations and election-rigging by the Intelligence Services, ie. CIA, NSA, DNI, etc., the Military-Defence Complex, hegemonic/Imperialistic Wars of economic exploitation, Cold War hype and Perpetual Wars, JFK et al. political assassination conspiracies and cover-up, Cointelpro, MK-Ultra and Mind Control, Federal Reserve scam/ponzai scheme, Union-busting, insider-trading and Organized Crime business-Corporate collusion/Racketeering, electronic election fraud, etc.?

I hold a LOT of things in America today with great contempt, and esp. many aspects of consumer-Corporate 'plastic', faux-Patriotic and materialistic culture -- But I also strongly identify with and have high regard for the American Civil Rights and Social Justice movements, for much of the creative and performing arts 'community' and culture, and for 'ordinary' people with their hopes and dreams and goals for positive, constructive change and a world living in peace. So OK, I'm an idealist ... although a cynical one.

Perhaps the thing is, I've become less Nationalistic and more Global in my perspective, and in my critique of interests and powers and myths and influence, ie. Who's behind What and WHY?

I guess I don't think there are ANY sacred cows immune from honest, deep analysis. I'm willing to admit the USA has been subverted and led along a terrible, destructive and dangerous Reality-path, when there are SO many more positive, life-affirming, just, progressive, honorable and equitable alternatives possible -- whatever happened to people's potential to imagine and work for a better world?

The PTB have perfected their strategies of Divide and Conquer, keeping the 'opposition/adversary' offbalance and busy 'responding', limiting 'choices', and circumscribing the terms of Public Dialogue, among others.

Starman
