Kuropas was a member of the delegation sent by President Bush to the Ukrainian presidential inauguration last week... <br><br>...Mr. Kuropas has accused Jews of manipulating the Holocaust for their own gain and blamed them for Soviet-era atrocities in Ukraine. He has written that 'Big money drives the Holocaust industry'...<br><br> When questioned with this information, a White House official said "We were not aware of his previous statements. Had we been aware of such comments beforehand, we would not have invited Dr. Kuropas to be a member of the delegation." The White House did not disclose who recommended Kuropas for the delegation.<br><br>Where are Foxman and Weiss on this one? This all shouldn't really bother the broader frum community because it is not nearly as deplorable as such heinous crimes like Hillary embracing Suha...<br><br>UPDATE: So while Kuropas is pissed at the White House' "dissavoal" of him, speculation abounds as to who reccomended him for the delegation. Fingers are pointing in the direction of House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, the congressman from Illinois whose district just happens to be home to Northern Illinois University, where Kuropas is a professor. Although Kuropas is also a Hastert donor, the speakers spokers deny having had anything to do with the appointment. Its rector—Georgi Shchyokin, has held several such conferences in recent years, in some cases involving Mr. Duke and in others Islamic extremists who share his antisemitic ideology. <br><br>Addressing the crowd, Mr. Duke, who regularly visits Russia and Ukraine to speak at far-right gatherings, reportedly said: “We will hope that people wake up before everything is lost… We as nationalities that make up the majority in our countries are very soft on minorities—sympathy towards them has long past the point of insanity.” Other speakers went further and called for the deportation of Jews from Ukraine. <br><br>Levka Lukyanenko—a member of the Ukrainian parliament from the Yuliya Timoshenko Bloc (the party of the Ukrainian Prime Minister)—reportedly attended the conference. In the July 21-27, 2004 issue of the MAUP publication “Personnel Plus”, Mr. Lukyanenko reportedly wrote: “Why don’t the Jews take at least a neutral position in the fight of the Russian chauvinists for empire and Ukrainian patriots for independence? No, they stand with the Russians against Ukrainians and actively move against us.”... <br><br>Meanwhile, in Kharkov, the local affiliate of MAUP is in open rebellion against MAUP’s Kiev leadership and its promotion of militant antisemitism. When the Kharkov rector supported student demands not to allow Kiev MAUP’s leadership to force them to sign up for Mr. Shchyokin’s newly registered Ukrainian Conservative Party, rector Shchyokin reportedly journeyed to Kharkov with “a group of skinhead ‘back up’” who “threatened [the Kharkov rector] with firing and violence.” <br><br>According to a May 26, 2005 posting on the Ukrainian Jewish web site Jewish News (
www.jn.com.ua), Mr. Shchyokin screamed antisemitic abuse at his subordinate.
