...however, I can't imagine my parents sending me on a trip with people who would let me spend my last night on a "party hearty" foreign island boozing it up with strange young men.

The fact that someone CAN be kidnapped from a confessional doesn't eliminate the duty of parents to act sensibly (this girl had just graduated from high school and was on a chaperoned 'field trip'), she wasn't a 'twentysomething off with her galpals and a shiny new credit card for a wild tropical adventure.

In point of fact *I* went on a study trip right out of high school with classmates and a teacher from our high school and the people who ran the tour were moralistic Mormons. Even the teacher wasn't allowed to drink in our presence! And we stayed in a convent school that had a curfew. Sure, I could have stayed out past curfew with that gorgeous Thai artist I met in Piazza Navona. But had I not been kidnapped the next day I'd have been flown home at my parents' expense because that was the deal. Break the rules, mom and dad have to remove you from the tour and when you get home you can get a job to pay them back for the flight and the unused part of the trip.

American parents are by and large the laziest bunch of overgrown adolescents on the planet. One of the reasons government has so much power is because they expect everybody to act "in loco parentis" when they abdicate their responsibilities.
