The links Starman provided led to a lot of information. I had a little time to look through some of it - indications point to this woman being in over her head, wheeled and dealed by vultures, chewed up and spat out - She even refers to herself as a "useful idiot" in a NYT article posted below. Very interestingly, in that article, her brother mentions that Susan knew about 911 advance! All this raises more questions than provides answers.

Lots of stuff:

* Starman posted the link to Daniel Pipe's Middle East Intelligence Bulletin (Jointly published by the United States Committee for a Free Lebanon and the Middle East Forum) They obviously saw use for her story to discredit the Clinton administration and to begin the demonization of Syria (how's that for advance planning?!). Though why did she use MEIB to publish her deposition? Perhaps they were the only jerks willing to help her, and she was indeed sincere in getting the message out. They note: "She has agreed to publish her email address, slndau@aol.com, along with this deposition so that journalists, researchers and others interested in learning more about this issue can contact her." www.meib.org/articles/0007_me2.htm

* After the spy charges and her arrest, her family (Card) and former employers (congresspersons!) deny ever knowing her:
"US charges woman 'spy for Saddam'"
news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world...502776.stm

* In fact, it is reported that Andy Card turns her in!:
"Former journalist charged with spying for Iraq"
s-r.com/newstrack-news-st...D=s1498511

Quote:
WASHINGTON -- A distant cousin of White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card was charged Thursday with working for the Iraqi Intelligence Service, after Card turned her in to the FBI for contacting him in the weeks before the war allegedly on behalf of Saddam Hussein's regime…

The indictment alleges that Lindauer left a letter outside the home of an unidentified U.S. official on Jan. 8, 2003, outlining her extensive contacts with the Iraqi dictator's government in what authorities described as an "attempt to influence United States foreign policy."

Two federal law enforcement sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the home was Card's.

*Finally, the NYT paints her as a smart but nutty, useful idiot & paranoid to the extreme. the more I read, the more it becomes likely this is MC, the split loyalties, the deft/smart, the context ...it sounds so familiar, it seems there's a new female prototype for this kind of operations (counterintel/political). There's a gender issue as well, emerging from between the lines. i hope she has legal representation and that whoever it is, knows something about MC. She didn't seem to have nice neighbours (from the accounts...)..which reminds me I just noticed a new neighbor in my floor, not next to my flat, but the one after. a young, solitaire, military types looking guy. under another situation, i'd be looking at him with some anticipation...(another unattached person, seems roughly my age). too bad.
anyway, i'll have to consider tin foils now :-).

another though of the newspeak involved in this case. she was probably - semi or un consciously - spying, if at all, against Iraw, FOR the usa or even another country, certainly not for Iraq, and then she is being charged with espionage. how clever, in a brutal way. this is becoming more prevalent, that brazen newspeak, not the usual lies, but 180 degrees lies, that leave the decent people with their mouth wide open. (same as the FMSF...leaves you just too stunned to respond, the audacity).
--
however, another thought. where are the people of the USA? this is quite a clear case of framing, and violation of civil rights...one would expect the minimum drill, protests, petitions etc. thing is, that since she is not a "clean" case, the human rights orgs don't want to get into it. that's too bad, cause it looks like it could be a precedent. In israel, I suppose in a case like that the left would gloss over the wierd stuff and make her a "peace hero" and rally the case all over, with bumper stickers etc. that's another good way to deal with it, although ideally the entire scam should be brought to light.

I'm bringing this back to the front page because someone posting at RI recently suggested that he/she had also been punished for something with a trip to a mental hospital.

Are whistleblowers getting imprisoned in psychiatric wards?

Claude Allen at the White House just got mysterious credit card fraud charges and faces 15 years in jail.

Is computer hacking the new way of discrediting people?

When this subject first came up, I remembered a short news item on broadcast news in the '80's that caught my eye at the time- namely that Pentagon whistleblowers were being committed to mental institutions. Several people were making the charge. I didn't post about it when the thread first started because I couldn't find any info. I do so now only to make the point that this tactic isn't new.

Attention: Havanagila re herbal suggestions

Not meaning to hijack the thread with an off-topic post, but I'm answering a question Havanagila asked here that I hadn't seen before, about herbal use for PMS.

Susun Weed is an herbalist that I and many others respect.
