China has declared that it will instigate a "human rights action plan" over the next two years designed in part to "expand democracy and strengthen rule of law".

According to Xinhua, the document will be formulated with contributions from the courts, parliament and non-government groups. Wang Chen of the government's PR department, the State Council Information Office, said the plan "showed the ruling Communist Party was committed to improving citizens' rights".

He insisted: "Respecting and protecting human rights ... is an important objective and principle of the Chinese Communist Party and the government."

Wang didn't give a release date for the document, and didn't mention any input from "the powerful ministries of public security and state security, which oversee the government's sweeping powers to detain citizens", as Reuters puts it. ®

Hehe-thanks again bigearth! It will be interesting to see how this shakes out. Somehow I think the "strengthen the rule of law" part may take precedence over the "expanding democracy" part.

Interesting days ahead for the whole world-I am afraid though-not a "good" interesting. It makes me feel sick and angry when I think about the amount of money countries spend on defense, while whole populations of people go to bed each night without food and shelter. The images of small children starving to death or having themselves and their families blown up in the name of "democracy" brings me to the point of despair. Thanks again for all of your contributions to the forum. Maybe the whole world needs a revolution! I think the world would be in such better shape if the larger and more economically powerful countries -starting with mine, could be broken up peacefully into smaller states.
