Lawsuit accuses Vatican Bank of role in World War II crimes BY RON GROSSMAN Chicago Tribune CHICAGO - (KRT) - Like any new pope, Benedict XVI inherits some problems from his predecessor, among them sexual abuse scandals and a Catholic Church deeply divided between progressives and traditionalists. Then there are William Dorich's accusations. Dorich, a Los Angeles book publisher, is the force behind a class-action lawsuit against the Vatican Bank and the Franciscan Order. Filed in a federal court in California, the suit alleges that immediately after World War II, the bank - the financial arm of the Roman Catholic Church - helped fleeing members of a brutal, pro-Nazi regime in Croatia hide and launder millions of dollars worth of loot, including gold and jewelry taken from concentration camp prisoners. According to Dorich and his lawyers, those riches were used to help the pro-Nazi henchmen slip out of Europe and escape to South America in 1945 and after. Dorich, the son of a Serbian immigrant, recalled that dozens of his relatives were massacred by the Ustashe, a Croatian puppet government installed by the Nazis when they conquered the Balkans in the 1940s. U.S. government documents of the period show that some Ustashe leaders and many of their financial resources made it to Rome during the chaos of the war's final months. But Dorich and other plaintiffs take the chain one crucial step further: Their suit alleges that the missing link between the money's arrival in Rome and its apparent transfer to South America was the Vatican itself. "From money stolen from the gold teeth of my relatives, the Vatican enabled Nazis to escape to Argentina," Dorich said. In 2003, a federal judge dismissed the case, saying U.S. courts lacked jurisdiction. But this spring, that decision was reversed by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. "Deciding this sort of controversy is exactly what courts do," a panel of the appellate court ruled in a 2-1 decision. The judges noted that the issues "ultimately boil down to whether the Vatican Bank is wrongfully holding assets." It could be years before the case goes to trial or is settled. The defendants are considering appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court. And even if the plaintiffs are able to prove the Vatican Bank played a role, that would not - of itself - settle the issue of who at the Vatican was involved or knew what was taking place. Still, as the Vatican continues to struggle with the role the church and its leading clergy played during the dark days of World War II, the case sheds renewed light on the tangled ethnic and religious landscape of Eastern Europe - and the way in which ancient feuds and hatreds played out during the horrors of a modern war. The events recalled in the case took place against the background of religious antagonisms that were still sparking violence and bloodshed in recent years, especially when Yugoslavia broke apart in the 1990s. Serbs are predominantly Orthodox Christians and Croats are predominantly Catholics. Despite their longstanding antipathies, Serbs and Croats were linked together in the creation of Yugoslavia after World War I. Yugoslavia was dominated by Serbs, so when Yugoslavia was defeated early in World War II, Croatian nationalists saw the Germans not as conquerors but liberators. Ustashe military detachments fought alongside Nazi armies while settling old scores. During the Ustashe regime, Orthodox Christians were subject to forced conversions to Catholicism. Serbian churches were looted and burned, sometimes with their congregations locked inside. In one such massacre, at a church in the village of Vojnic, 99 people were burned alive on April 17, 1942. "Seventeen of the victims were my relatives," said Dorich, who visited the site. According to Jonathan Levy, one of the plaintiffs' attorneys, the Franciscans were named as defendants because the political extremism of the period was fueled by religious hatred. "Not everybody who collaborated with the Germans committed atrocities," Levy said. "But in the Ustashe movement, religiosity was wrapped up with fascism." The lawsuit alleges that members of the Franciscan Order were allied with the Ustashe and participated in attacks on Serbs. "Our official position is that there is nothing to the allegations," said Ronald Mallen, attorney for the Franciscan Order. "The other side ignores the fact that `Brother Devil' was excommunicated." That was the nickname given to Brother Miroslav Filipovic-Majstorovic by inmates of the notorious Jasenovac concentration camp, where tens of thousands of Serbs, Jews and Gypsies perished. A Franciscan brother before becoming the camp's commandant, Filipovic-Majstorovic was tried and hanged as a war criminal after World War II. Other Ustashe leaders got away. When Germany's defeat became imminent in late 1944 and 1945, high-ranking members of the Croatian government fled, some passing through Rome en route to escaping from Europe. The military and political situation in Italy was chaotic. From day to day, it would be hard to say who was in charge. German troops were fleeing northward. Italian partisans led popular uprisings. Arriving Allied forces struggled to establish some sort of order. Ante Pavelic, the head of the Ustashe government, and 1,500 of his followers made their way through Austria to Italy. They carried with them gold - estimates of its value vary widely from a few hundred thousand dollars to many millions, according to U.S. military reports at the time. The route of the Ustashe leaders and treasure can roughly be traced through memos written by U.S. Army intelligence officers. One 1946 memo on the Ustashe treasury said that "approximately 200 million Swiss Francs (about $47 million) were originally held in the Vatican for safe-keeping" before being moved to Spain and Argentina. Like other documents of the time, that one is tantalizingly silent about whether "Vatican" meant the Vatican Bank or the papal city-state, a political enclave within Rome. A 1947 intelligence report noted: "Many of the more prominent Ustashe war criminals and Quislings are living in Rome illegally, many under false names. ... All this activity seems to stem from the Vatican." Long classified and buried in military archives, those memos first came to light through the detective work of author John Loftus. Once a Justice Department lawyer assigned to track wanted war criminals, Loftus had come upon documents suggesting that Catholic clergy had a role in the so-called Rat Line, an underground railroad that helped Nazis and their allies escape to Latin America. Pavelic went to Argentina, he found. There the ex-strongman was supported by proceeds from the Ustashe treasury, which traveled the same route, according to a 1998 State Department investigation of assets stolen by Germans and their collaborators during World War II. "From the character of the Ustashe regime and the nature of its wartime activities," that report said, "this sum almost certainly included some quantity of victim gold." The State Department's investigation was belatedly instigated under congressional pressure, after parallel cases of looting of Holocaust victims' assets became a hot issue in the 1990s. "The State Department knew about those documents for 50 years and did nothing," said Loftus, who later wrote of his discoveries in the 1992 book "Unholy Trinity." He attributes the government's long reluctance to investigate the affair to the fact that American hands weren't clean, either. As World War II segued into the Cold War, U.S. and British officials were eager to recruit former Axis agents and willing to overlook their wartime records. William Gowen, an Army intelligence officer stationed in Rome at the war's end, was the author of some of the newly surfaced memos. He was then barely out of his teens, but because he was fluent in Italian he found himself in the thick of an investigation of the Rat Line. He discovered that a Croatian Catholic monastery in Rome was sheltering a flock of armed men, presumably former Ustashe operatives. "We found out about the Ustashe treasury and knew it had been brought to Rome," Gowen said in an interview. "But where in Rome?" Gowen said Ustashe funds eventually were transferred to Swiss banks, and then presumably to Latin America. "The Swiss banks are famous for their secrecy. Once you have an account there you can send money anywhere, no questions asked," Gowen said. "But you couldn't just drive truckloads of gold, jewelry and other valuables across the Swiss border." Accordingly, Ustashe loot had to be converted into currency that could not be traced, then transferred to Switzerland. The lawsuit alleges that the Vatican Bank was the perfect agent to perform that money laundering. Should the suit go forward, plaintiffs' attorneys will press the Vatican to open its archives in hopes of finding documents to cement their thesis. Jeffrey Lena, an attorney for the Vatican Bank, declined to comment. The Serbs' lawyers hope to mobilize public opinion, noting there has been a pattern to similar suits on behalf of Holocaust victims and World War II slave laborers: After first denying the allegations and resisting the lawsuits, Swiss banks and German industries felt enough pressure to make an out-of-court settlement. Attorneys for the defendants petitioned the full appellate court to overturn the finding of the three-judge panel, but their request was turned down in June. The Franciscans' attorney said that decision, in turn, will be appealed to the Supreme Court; the Vatican Bank's attorney said a Supreme Court appeal is under consideration. Both defendants still contend that the dispute doesn't belong in court but should be resolved by diplomacy, since the Vatican is not just a religious body but a sovereign state. Mallen, the Franciscans' attorney, noted that under the law, his client can argue that the affair belongs to the world of diplomacy without conceding there is anything for diplomats to negotiate - without, that is, admitting any wrongdoing. Others, though, wonder if that argument might be too subtle for the court of public opinion. "It's not exactly a plea of innocence, is it?" Theres not an ice cubes chance in 'hell' that these sort of things will ever see the inside of a courtroom, the terrorist governments of the world see to that with their handpicked' judges, super well paid lawyers to stop these things getting public scrutiny. How many times have i seen the mother of all smokescreens suddenly enveloping such cases and being dismissed on some 'technicality' or other? The only way is a mass storming of the vatican, theres enough people gathered there everyday in totally blinded faith, get storming them vatican vaults for all sorts of forbidden knowledge/evidence, thats been nicely locked away for centuries. Get these religious fraudsters and hoaxers hooked up to the polygraphs and administer the truth serums, these tricksters keep regurgatating they have nothing to hide? yes well i am santa claus.....

The Vatican has already been sued successfully in the lawcourts both in Rome, London and Washongton DC - in a series of private lawsuits connected to the pedophile crimes of the notorious P2 Lodge - which is currently in the spotlight for the murder of 'God's Banker' Roberto Calvi in London in July 1982. The Rome hearing resumes in October. Many of the military classified documents relating to the organised crime cartels that ran the Vatican during the years 1914 - 1945 and subsequently in the cold war years are held under the UK's Official Secrets Act. A large proportion of them are timelocked and stay under a D Notice (Ministry of Defence gagging order) during the lifetime of 'Queen Elizabeth II'. This arrangement was repeatedly enforced and buttressed by UK prime ministers. Notably, the most vociferous and determined PM was Thatcher who was terrified of the consequences to the UK Tory Party and her core personal supporters that any public disclosure would bring. In 1998 a major section of Poodle's Good Friday Agreement with Irish nationals reinforced the specific documents that most worried Thatcher. I guess all politicians dread upsetting any major swathe of their potential electorates and take the easy option of lying, cheating, deceiving, obfuscating and continuing the perpetration of concealment of atrocities too shameful for their personal, political comforts.

One week after sliming his way into high ecclesiastical officce, Papa Ratzi's PR machine admitted their man had had a series of strokes and was not as fit/chipper as the spin docs implied in the run up to the conclave. Guess they're counting on this frailty - maybe the same way as JP1 who managed just 30 days in the job before mysteriously exiting to meet his maker. "In God's Name" by David Yallop refers....

I'm surmising that they'll need to keep him on tap for a bit yet. it's under Peter that the exodus and 'fini' happens. what does that mean? all those old records 'dust to dust' or will they be quietly spirited away? and to what extent and where does this fit into plans for the next 'big fix', whether that's sanhedrin, maitreya, rael, or, drumroll please, 'the nine'. what's happening in Italy now is not as simple as the Guelph vs Ghibelline saga. not that anything ever was/is. but they're still, notedly, tip-toeing around the big B. mention was made here a few days ago, in connection with gladio, re: 'the sacred order..', all too similarly long-winded like the name of the 'claim' group. history's a curious thing. guess what the name of benedict of nursia's s-i-c was. but I'm mindful also of 'the best laid plans...'

The Christian archaeological artefacts, documents and related religious ephemera whose very existence is covered up by major sections of the UK's Official Secrets Act [for the period running from the September 1940 Nazi bombing of Buckingham Palace to the end of 1957 and events centred on the Suez crisis] are the key to the Vatican's continuing dilemma. Sucessive Popes have taken massive gambles that 20th century political pacts made with Soviet-controlled crime cartels that slid effortlessly into prime public office positions would uphold the secrecy that guards any mention of the existence of undisputed physical evidence which totally undermines any validity of Roman Catholic Church claims to supernatural supremacy. Mostly this refers to the Biblical personae of 'Jesus', 'Mary', 'Mary Magdalen' and St John the Baptist. These have been at the core of all Christian church schizms and power struggles. The Christian dilemma remains: how the hell do you tell the worshipping faithfull masses (who have bankrolled those ecclesiastical coffers for centuries...) that it was John the Baptist who died on the cross? And that the rest is fairy-tale stuff built up on pre-Christian era pagan oral histories that were invented to wipe out any reference to Isis. Many unpublicised but authenticated archaeological discoveries from the days of the Knights Templar through to the Napoleonic era and also into the late 19th and early 20th centuries are in the custody of ONE UK family (not the 'Windsors'...). The threat they pose to the Vatican iseyond estimation. In addition, political, military and geneological documents relating to the identity of Pope Benedict XV and Pope Pius XII also form a substantial chunk of that particular section of the UK Official Secrets Act, especially viz their relevance to notable UK figures such as Sir Oswald Moseley (British Fascist party leader), the Mitford family, the Freeman family, Archbishop Cosmo Lang, Lord Montbatten of Burma and 'Elizabeth Bowes Lyons'. The common denominator that links the Vatican's war crimes culpability to these players if the Gelli family. Political pacts brokered by President Harry S Truman and Sir Winston Churchill culminated in President John F Kennedy ratifying and upholding treaties and agreements that saw the official abolition of 'the House of Windsor' from April 1963. JFK's November 1963 assassination has to be viewed in that light. From the end of 1971 a rival British monarchy was ratified. Successive UK Prime Minister have made it their personal crusade to destroy all public reference to this and to frame their own criminal activities/connections on the targets of their abuse. Those acts of criminality blamed on the IRA and IRA hybrids were acts of political collusion on the orders of Moscow. And the most culpable puppet masters in this civil war were 'Ronald Reagan' and 'George Bush Senior'. Yet another major section of the UK Official Secrets Act (covering the period roughly from 1963 to 1971) relates directly to their personal involvement in gang rapes and attempted murder. The Vatican gamble was at the heart of their actions.

I don't pretend to have even a moderately-comprehensive grasp of all the intricacies and intrigue involving Moscow, the House of Windsor, the Official Secrecy Act, or the Role of the Vatican in this and related issues, esp. protecting and facilitating secret rightwing consolidation of power via Gladio/P2 and organized crime networks and bank-mediated transfers of wealth. But -- To add to better understanding: Some interesting tidbits below I recently found suggesting that Cardinal Ratzinger was selected pope for coldly pragmatic reasons, given his key hardline involvement in having managed the cover-up of Church pedophilia cases and thus holding much critical information, and that the actual numbers of child abuse incidents committed by church priests may be in the tens of millions -- consider the size of crime and massive obstruction of justice the Holy Catholic Church may be involved in by not making its information available to public prosecuters/investigators, and in the new Pope seeking diplomatic immunity to shield him (and the Church) from legal accountability. Shame! Also-- Intriguing indications that Pope Paul/Vatican aided Bush's power-putsch and is now benefitting from Quid-pro-Quo deal-making. Any 'church' openly assisting the present neocon/globalist criminal conspiracy is NOT showing evidence of spiritual integrity -- Just some of the most recent indications of anorganizations perverted by lust for power and wealth and self-interest. The Church's betrayal of Latin American Liberation Theology (via Ratzinger's personal office delegated by the late Pope John Paul, was utterly despicable -- I found much in Liberation Theology practices to be inspiring and very light-filled, precisely what the beleagured citizens under brutal terror-assaults by the US's destructive neofascist madness needed to help them resist and protect their communities -- Was the Vatican responding to US State Dept. pressure to undermine and delegitimize Liberation Theology because it was impeding the US's terror and propaganda ops? The US's crimes in Central America are a huge blot that for the most part Americans STILL haven't even acknowledged or resolved -- If the Vatican were truly involved in God's work it could/would have taken a strong stand against the enormous crimes and abuses and genocide being waged with key US support and involvement, and could have been at the forefront inspiring and organizing a truly revolutionary movement throughout Latin America on behalf of human rights and social justice and progressive reform -- Like the issue of Pedophilia, the Church utterly bungled its opportunity and obligation, and instead showed how corrupt and narrowly self-serving it is. In other words, the new Pope’s solution to the problem of priestly sexual abuse of minors is to sweep the entire body of evidence under the carpet in a series of star chamber proceedings that will keep the public in the dark and prevent the evidence from exposure to the glaring light of publicity. Yesterday, at his ritual enthronement, Pope Benedict XVI was seated on his throne where he was approached by supplicants who knelt down and kissed his papal ring. Without any question, the most evocative image from this ritual came when Florida governor, Jeb Bush, swiftly approached Benedict’s throne, knelt down, kissed the papal ring and – with a curiously ecstatic expression on his face – he began to speak fervently, passionately and unashamedly into the face of the new pontiff. Whatever the trivialities of their self-serving confabulation, it is clear that this political pontiff will not hesitate to intervene on behalf of the candidate he prefers in the next US presidential election. It is very likely that candidate will be Jeb Bush. The new pope is a seasoned political interventionist, and he will not hesitate to support the Bush Dynasty and its best interests, politically, ecclesiastically and ‘spiritually’. At the same time that Ratzinger was goose-stepping in the ranks of the Hitler Youth, the grandfather of George and Jeb Bush was raking in the profits from his day job – an American banker for Hitler’s Third Reich who helped to arrange financing for the rearmament of Nazi Germany. This is an indelible bond between the house of Bush and the papacy of Benedict XVI. The world was treated to a surrealistic tableau upon the death of John Paul II. Two former presidents, George H. W. Bush and William Jefferson Clinton, along with the current president were photographed leaning on the dead Pope’s casket and praying solemnly. Bush, Sr. has never been known to be a religious man, however, shortly after his defeat for the presidency in 1993, he appeared at a huge evangelical rally for the Reverend Sun Myung Moon that was held in Latin America. Bush, Sr. gave his testimony for the evangelical mission and the spiritual message of The Reverend Sun Myung Moon. To his horror, Bush’s appearance as a Moonie was filmed by the BBC and broadcast to the shock of huge audiences in Europe. The religious conversions of George Bush into born again Christian that was personally mediated by Billy Graham, and Jeb Bush into born again Roman Catholic suggest that the Bush family has become publicly zealous and probably fanatical concerning its religious political commitments. Now, the Bushes have a Pope who shares their enthusiasm for the covering up of collaborations with the Nazis. It is not difficult to predict that they will share his enthusiasm for covering up the millions cases of priestly sexual abuse of millions of American children. The political scene is now perfectly set for divine intervention in American politics for years to come, and the murky mystery surrounding of the amazingly swift selection of Cardinal Josef Ratzinger as the new Pope has become clarified. Fearing a tsunami of negative publicity that could last for decades, the College of Cardinals voted for the man whom they deemed to be the most capable of covering up the growing global scandal of the priestly sexual abuse of Roman Catholic children. emad: Political pacts brokered by President Harry S Truman and Sir Winston Churchill culminated in President John F Kennedy ratifying and upholding treaties and agreements that saw the official abolition of 'the House of Windsor' from April 1963. JFK's November 1963 assassination has to be viewed in that light. From the end of 1971 a rival British monarchy was ratified. Interesting thesis, emad. Would love to see some evidence.

about the 'Cult of the Snake' in Judea and Jerusalem circa AD10 - AD 45 that evolved into early 'Christianity' after concerted efforts by successive Roman leaders to build on dubious quasi-religious and superstitious practises among their target populations. As I understand it, mostly official Roman military occupation documentation that is contemporaneous with events described in the New Testament, on the theme of brainwashing a captive audience by feeding it with what it craves.
