East Timor Demands Reparation From US & UK

Prensa Latina 11/30/05<br><!--EZCODE AUTOLINK START--><a href="http://www.plenglish.com/article.asp?ID={1A75F481-B664-4C07-8E0C-A35A084D28CB})&language=EN">www.plenglish.com/article...anguage=EN</a><!--EZCODE AUTOLINK END--><br><br>ETimor: Payback for Torture Victims<br><br>Dili, Nov 30 (Prensa Latina) The government of East Timor has demanded compensations for the victims of torture and violence during Indonesia"s invasion and occupation of the country from 1975 to 1999, it was reported on Tuesday.<br><br>The Commission for Reception, Truth and Reconciliation issued a report denouncing the US and British governments" support for Indonesia, so they must also contribute to the compensation fund.<br><br>The document also demands compensations from the companies that benefited from arms sales to Indonesia during the occupation of East Timor, including British Aerospace, whose Hawk fighters were allegedly used to attack the resistance.<br><br>East Timor"s Attorney General"s Office filed charges against dozens of Indonesian Army officials, who were accused of crimes against humankind after the referendum on the independence of the former Portuguese colony in 1999.<br><br>According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Indonesia"s 25-year occupation of East Timor left a toll of more than 700,000 deaths and 200,000 political prisoners.<br><br> <p></p><i></i>
