The Matrix' is a step closer to reality

In reality, scientists cannot interact directly with the brain because they do not understand enough about how it codes and decodes information.

Now, neuroscientists in the McGovern Institute at MIT have been able to decipher a part of the code involved in recognizing visual objects. Practically speaking, computer algorithms used in artificial vision systems might benefit from mimicking these newly uncovered codes.

The study, a collaboration between James DiCarlo's and Tomaso Poggio's labs, appears in the Nov. 4 issue of Science.

"We want to know how the brain works to create intelligence," said Poggio, the Eugene McDermott Professor in Brain Sciences and Human Behavior. "Our ability to recognize objects in the visual world is among the most complex problems the brain must solve. Computationally, it is much harder than reasoning." Yet we take it for granted because it appears to happen automatically and almost unconsciously.

"This work enhances our understanding of how the brain encodes visual information in a useful format for brain regions involved in action, planning and memory," said DiCarlo, an assistant professor of neuroscience.

In a fraction of a second, visual input about an object runs from the retina through increasingly higher levels of the visual stream, continuously reformatting the information until it reaches the highest purely visual level, the inferotemporal (IT) cortex. The IT cortex identifies and categorizes the object and sends that information to other brain regions.

To explore how the IT cortex formats that output, the researchers trained monkeys to recognize different objects grouped into categories, such as faces, toys and vehicles. The images appeared in different sizes and positions in the visual field. Recording the activity of hundreds of IT neurons produced a large database of IT neural patterns generated in response to each object under many different conditions.

Then, the researchers used a computer algorithm, called a classifier, to decipher the code. The classifier was used to associate each object -- say, a monkey's face -- with a particular pattern of neural signals, effectively decoding neural activity. Remarkably, the classifier found that just a split second's worth of the neural signal contained specific enough information to identity and categorize the object, even at positions and sizes the classifier had not previously "seen."

It was quite surprising that so few IT neurons (several hundred out of millions) for such a short period of time contained so much precise information. "If we could record a larger population of neurons simultaneously, we might find even more robust codes hidden in the neural patterns and extract even fuller information," Poggio said.

Source: MIT

bending time for military purposes

Postby Trifecta » Fri Nov 18, 2005 5:38 am

Ishtak Bentov in his book Stalking the wild pendulum gives details on how individuals can stop time. I have done it myself, when in a mediative state and concentration is high...now this!

www.indiadaily.com/editorial/5364.asp

Scientists are on the verge of a mind-boggling discovery! They are getting early clues to a phenomenon unknown to our conventional science. Time and space can be detached. While the three spatial dimensions define space, time can be stopped.

That is how the extraterrestrial UFOs travel at million times faster speeds than light. The phenomenon is known as bending time into steeper gradient. The military engineers and technologists are carrying secret experiments in different countries.

The biggest clue comes from the extraterrestrial UFOs. Those involved in reverse engineering extraterrestrial UFO technologies say time can be stopped, reversed, manipulated as a mathematical function. Astonishingly time can be accelerated, retarded and even there is a concept where a time derivative of time can exist in classical sense.

In the physical universe, time can always be accelerated within the realm of space-time conical connectivity. According to this theory the whole universe is controlled through a series central massive black hole at the center of the galaxies. As the Universe is aging more black holes are added to the system to provide more structural strength to the whole universe. The time dimension is controlled by the “controlling black hole” of the galaxy. Time is accelerated within the black hole and in its surrounding all the time.

Time is really relative. If the supernova of a star is made to happed a billion years sooner, time is accelerated within the realm of that black hole zone.

Time also can be reversed and pushed back. If events are slowed down, time is reversed. Inside a black hole time near the points of singularity is literally reversed. Reversing time as a dimension is mastered by the type IV civilizations. That technology is needed to get out of the physical universe into Hyperspace on someone’s’ way to parallel universes.

The biggest strange phenomenon scientists are looking at it the time derivative of time. It is a concept when time and space are totally detached and the scale or unit by which a time is seen to advance is manipulated. The manipulation results is space curvature that creates extra dimensions in spatial structures.

Forgive me I simply cannot resist

Postby AnnaLivia » Fri Nov 18, 2005 12:58 pm

Well, here’s a smart-ass comment you might have expected from the Prom Committee (who would never go to MIT because they don’t know how to boogie up there from what we hear, and they decorate with no flair.)

We suggest they get up a lab where they finally probe how to transport food from one locale where it’s plentiful, to another where people are starving…and another lab where they figure out how to stop people with no scruples from manufacturing job and housing scarcity…and another to solve the mystery of why resources are bought cheap, sent somewhere else to be made into products, and then sold back as expensive goods to those in the place the resources came from…and another to explore where the idea came from that we should institutionalize our children and elders…and one to look into whether the problem with alan greenspan is that he doesn’t know what he’s doing or whether it’s that he knows what he’s doing but is doing it anyway...and finally a lab to sort out why we were safer when we were food for tigers than we are in modern society, being eaten by wealthpowerful assholes.

We have more ideas for making MIT scientists a tad more useful, but the above should keep them busy for a while.

Then they can go back to playing science for brainsport, k?

Just our two cents rant. Sorry to interrupt the discussion. We’ll go tell our parents we deserve a spanking now.

(don’t be mad at me, Osculum Infame. I really couldn’t stop myself. Just consider it a bump to your thread?)

and, the Prom girls really do love The Matrix, and are fascinated that you can stop time. One of our teachers talks about stuff like that, only, he describes his meditating as more like total UN-concentration. At least it sounds like that to us. Sorta…getting everything to go out of your brain until you realize you’re not a part of everything, you ARE everything. We can only say we think we understand this on an intellectual level, but are far from realizing or internalizing it. Maybe we’re just too busy auditioning bands for the big dance these days…

anyways, it’s all about connections. Hey, have you seen an old movie called Mindwalk? We thought that flick was WAY cool.

When you say 'stop time'...

Postby banned » Fri Nov 18, 2005 10:59 pm

...you can't mean that literally since if you did that, everyone would be aware that time had stopped. Don't you mean you can take YOURSELF out of time?

i thought The Matrix was about this the way it is already -

you are a soul inhabiting a body, same way in the matrix you're controlling a body in a physical programme,

virtual reality is kind of an embedded resonance of what our souls are already doing in these DNA suits here.

that classical physics time bit reminds me of things in the film Primer about how their time-containment devices might work - do you know if that particular one includes the very-fast-oscillations phenomena, if it does its probably related.

the way those reverse-engineered crafts use fields around them / in them is also how they get that 'tardis' effect of having loads of space inside what seems to be a small area - it helps to visualise this if you consider that in different gravity arrangements then you can use the walls and ceilings as tho' they are also the floor, but the space isn't just coming from that.
