immigrants disappearing?

Postby yathrib » Mon Jul 17, 2006 11:35 am

Over the past decade or so, my neighborhood has been a major center of immigration--legal and illegal--from Central America. Some have jokingly called the area in question the "second largest city in El Salvador." I can't say that I've always been any more fond of this than the average white, suburban American, but I've gotten used to it, and have even come to appreciate some aspects of it. Examples: the ethnic cuisine, the essential good-heartedness of most of these people, the lower rate of actual crime (yep, you heard me correctly), and more.

But anyway, over the past few weeks, much of this has disappeared. Two pupusa stands where there used to be about twelve, Hispanic churches that used to be bursting at the seams on Sunday (and Saturday) mornings now nearly unnoticeable, and no more crowds of day laborers on workdays. The last of these--I must admit--was the perhaps the least endearing aspect of their presence, but it is weird to just see it evaporate like this. All of this is weird, and creepy.

It got weirder and creepier when several neighbors and friends told me that they had seen large numbers of law enforcement personnel and vehicles rounding people up in these areas, all to the accompaniment of *no* news coverage whatsoever. I see enough local news that I would know if any such coverage appeared, and usually such large-scale sweeps *are* covered.

Thoughts?

get a camera and a van with foiled out windows.
nothing surprising that people disappear, but mass disappearances - that's nasty.

It's a racket.

Rounding up immigrants turns out to be very profitable for some. The whole for-profit market economy has demanded the conditions, laid the groundwork and forced the reality whereby such "bed space" will necessarily be made available, for more profit. Design and implement the political economy which creates an explosion of migrant workers; profit off them handsomely; and mop up the guaranteed excess supply for a) more profit b) to limit excess political organizing and c) placate all ends of the white political spectrum. Now, if we can get those migrant detainees to do some chores around the house, what a bonus! Add Corrections Corp. to my portfolio, and quick.

Edited by: Gouda at: 7/19/06 12:02 pm

Quote:
27,500 out of approximately 10-12 million illegal immigrants currently in the US.

That's 27,500 per night. That's Cancun for cucarachas. Deportation sometimes follows detention, if you are lucky....oh, fear not, not you.

Regardless, even if that number was 1 of 10-12 million, it is wrong - as in Nazi Germany, as in Palestine, as in Stalin's russia. It must be some kind of special trait, dear Sepka, to be able to speak so coldly about thousands of humans. The engineer-like way that you convert people to fractions and ratios surely is a skill someone could utilize. You may find it reassuring that should the country be overtaken by synthetic, or natural, or naturally synthetic, catastrophic events once again, the ever-flexible private sector will be well-positioned to handle any percentage increase in bed space demand and/or detainee needs. "Lots of opportunities, if there aren't you can make them..."

Quote:
What you're seeing here is noting more than a PR operation by the Bush administration, trying to convince the voters that they're being tough on illegal immigration while they work behind the scenes to pass an amnesty package.

Help, my friends and neighbors have been disappeared by a PR operation! Oh, it is something more. What you say may be true on the surface, exo-political level, but of course, it just ain't that way deep at the heart of things. Mind you, the corporate government on Wall Street is also trying to avoid a general strike by millions of migrant workers. Govt, Big Business no like general strike. By the way, amnesty for what? Being born on the wrong side of a border we (our own immigrant ancestors) stole?

Edited by: Gouda at: 7/20/06 2:36 am
