WARSAW, Poland - Poland's foreign minister summoned the U.S. ambassador on Tuesday to answer allegations that a senior American diplomat overstepped his bounds in a conversation with an aide to the prime minister.
Foreign Minister Anna Fotyga met with U.S. Ambassador Victor Ashe Tuesday evening to clarify comments by Ashe's chief deputy during a meeting Oct. 25 with a senior government official, embassy spokesman Andrew Schilling said.
Deputy Prime Minister Roman Giertych has alleged that Kenneth Hillas, the No. 2 diplomat at the U.S. Embassy, suggested Giertych — a longtime opponent of Poland's support of the U.S. in Iraq — be dismissed.

According to segments of a Polish government document summarizing the conversation published by Gazeta Wyborcza newspaper, the comments were made in reaction to demands by Giertych for a parliamentary debate focusing on the civilian casualties in Iraq.
Hillas allegedly said: "If the deputy prime minister of a country like Germany, France or Denmark made such comments, he would be dismissed."
