the excessive time being spent on internet-insider bullshit, hysterical personal diatribes against and instigating fellow posters, and hyena-like attacks?

Usually by those who have the least "substance" to contribute to these discussions. I know, because I get sucked into these flame wars, due to a combination of heresy and personality. Personally, I'm pledging to not respond to that shit any more at all, especially if I don't think they're worth my time. We'll see how long I can keep it up, but as long as I post, you can be sure I'll continue to keep the "substance" up.

These gatekeeper-trolls seem to want to turn these discussions into "you're either with us or against us" one-line back-and-forth affirmations.

Fuck people, we are all freaked out. Let's keep it together enough to stay on point -- which is learning new stuff, and debating important questions, and questioning orthodoxy, and challenging sacred cows if they need to be challenged.

As much as I'm sure we all need it, this is a discussion board, not group therapy, and any idea that there is or should be any genuine and substantial "community" here, beyond an agreement to disagree, is a foolish dream. Sure, we can socialize in the parlour, and wring our hands about how evil bush is, and lend advice, and help people out if necessary. But where's the balance?
