Navy ship nearby underused --Craft with food, water, doctors needed orders

ON THE USS BATAAN -- While federal and state emergency planners scramble to get more military relief to Gulf Coast communities stricken by Hurricane Katrina, a massive naval goodwill station has been cruising offshore, underused and waiting for a larger role in the effort.

The USS Bataan, a 844-foot ship designed to dispatch Marines in amphibious assaults, has helicopters, doctors, hospital beds, food and water. It also can make its own water, up to 100,000 gallons a day. Wayne Madsen report

Postby dbeach » Sun Sep 04, 2005 10:08 pm

www.waynemadsenreport.com/
September 4, 2005 -- WMR contacted by spokesperson for James Lee Witt. Yesterday, WMR reported that according to a June 3, 2004 press release from Innovative Emergency Management (IEM), Inc. it received a FEMA contract to develop a "Catastrophic Hurricane Disaster Plan for New Orleans & Southeast Louisiana." The IEM press release stated that among its team partners was James Lee Witt Associates. Witt was FEMA director under President Clinton and he restored that agency's disaster recovery effectiveness after President George H. W. Bush's ineffective response to Hurricane Andrew in 1992. According to Witt's spokesperson, James Lee Witt Associates continues to be fraudulently listed on IEM's web site as a team partner for the over $500,000 FEMA contract work. The IEM press release that contains the erroneous information has been disappearing and reappearing, another sign of something suspicious with the contractor.

IEM, which is an 8-A minority-owned firm, apparently used Witt's name as a "buy in" ploy to lock in the FEMA contract. What is fishier is that the IEM press release was reportedly sent out before the FEMA contract was actually awarded. After IEM began the work on the FEMA contract, it never once used Witt's company and did not pay it one cent. Informed sources claim that IEM, owned by a big donor to the GOP, is notorious for not completing work after contracts are awarded. The Catastrophic Hurricane Disaster Plan for New Orleans and Southeast Louisiana was no exception. Mr. Witt is now acting as a pro bono disaster recovery adviser for Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco. Witt's spokesperson was frank is stating, "you don't really think the Bush administration would have given a contract to someone who worked for Bill Clinton?" That is very true. The issue with the incomplete FEMA hurricane preparedness plan is in IEM's and its actual partners' court. James Lee Witt, likely America's most effective FEMA Director, had nothing to do with the IEM work and he now needs all the support the nation and state of Louisiana can muster as he prepares to confront America's worst natural disaster in its history. [Note to bloggers: please ensure widest dissemination of this story. Someone is trying to set up Mr. Witt and the editor smells Karl Rove.]

John Kerry speaking of the Republicans in 2004: "These guys are the most crooked, you know, lying group of people I’ve ever seen."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CNN interview with Witt

Postby Fearless » Sun Sep 04, 2005 10:13 pm

Witt said minutes ago that Bush isn't telling the truth about "not knowing it would happen" AND FEMA was gutted AFTER 9-11. Reporter Anderson Cooper had him repeat it and expand on what he said.

National Guard Played Cards While People Died in NO

Postby Fearless » Sun Sep 04, 2005 11:56 pm

Guardsmen Played Cards While People Died In New Orleans
9-4-5

NEW ORLEANS, United States (AFP) - A top New Orleans police officer said that National Guard troops sat around playing cards while people died in the stricken city after Hurricane Katrina. New Orleans deputy police commander W.S. Riley launched a bitter attack on the federal response to the disaster though he praised the way the evacuation was eventually handled. His remarks fuelled controversy over the government's handling of events during five days when New Orleans succumbed to lawlessness after Katrina swamped the city's flood defenses.

The National Guard commander, Lieutenant General Steven Blum, said the reservist force was slow to move troops into New Orleans because it did not anticipate the collapse of the city's police force. But Riley said that for the first three days after Monday's storm, which is believed to have killed several thousand people, the police and fire departments and some volunteers had been alone in trying to rescue people.

"We expected a lot more support from the federal government. We expected the government to respond within 24 hours. The first three days we had no assistance," he told AFP in an interview.

Riley went on: "We have been fired on with automatic weapons. We still have some thugs around. My biggest disappointment is with the federal government and the National Guard. "The guard arrived 48 hours after the hurricane with 40 trucks. They drove their trucks in and went to sleep.

"For 72 hours this police department and the fire department and handful of citizens were alone rescuing people. We have people who died while the National Guard sat and played cards. I understand why we are not winning the war in Iraq if this is what we have."

Riley said there is "a semblance of organisation now."

........

www.rense.com/general67/guards.htm

Re: And below the cartoon: Bush team tries to pin blame on l

Postby DrDebugDU » Mon Sep 05, 2005 6:32 am

Bush team tries to pin blame on local officials

Julian Borger in Washington
Monday September 5, 2005
The Guardian

Bush administration officials yesterday blamed state and local officials for the delays in bringing relief to New Orleans, as the president struggled to fend off the most serious political crisis of his presidency.

His top officials continued to be pilloried on television talk shows by liberals and conservatives alike, but the White House began to show signs of an evolving strategy to prevent the relief fiasco from eclipsing the president's second term.

The outrage over the government's relief effort has hit Mr Bush at a time when he is already weakened by the gruelling war in Iraq. The threat is not only to his place in history; it could also cripple his second-term agenda, undermining his plans to privatise the social security system and to end inheritance tax.

Mr Bush also faces a much more difficult task in appointing an ideological conservative to take the supreme court seat of William Rehnquist, who died on Saturday.

The White House drew encouragement from an initial poll suggesting most Republican voters were sticking by him, and his supporters also pointed to Mr Bush's track record of recovering from mistakes. His initial response to the September 11 attacks was also sharply criticised. With that in mind, the first plank in the political recovery strategy has been to try to make up for lost time. On Saturday Mr Bush ordered 7,000 more troops to the Gulf coast.

As important as the content of the speech was its sombre tone. It was clear the White House realised that making a joke about his young hell-raising days in New Orleans in the course of a flying visit to the flooded city on Friday, was a mistake that reinforced allegations he had failed to take the disaster seriously enough.

The White House also announced yesterday that the president had cancelled public engagements, including a meeting with the Chinese president, Hu Jintao. Instead, he was due to return to the scene of the devastation.

The second element of the White House plan is to insist, in an echo of the September 11 attacks, that the scale of the disaster, the combination of a hurricane and the collapse of the levee system around New Orleans, could not have been foreseen.

Mr Bush was castigated for saying on Wednesday: "I don't think anyone anticipated the breach of the levees". It was pointed out that there had been a string of investigations and reports in recent years which had predicted the disaster almost exactly.

Nevertheless, administration officials stuck to the line yesterday. In a string of television interviews, Michael Chertoff, the head of the homeland security department, called the situation an "ultra- catastrophe", as if the hurricane and flood were unrelated events. "That 'perfect storm' of a combination of catastrophes exceeded the foresight of the planners, and maybe anybody's foresight," he said.

The third element in the administration's political response has been to counter-attack against the blame directed at the federal authorities, particularly the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) and its parent body, the homeland security department.

In his weekend radio address, Mr Bush implied many of the problems had been caused by lower levels of government. The scale of the crisis "has created tremendous problems that have strained state and local capabilities. The result is that many of our citizens simply are not getting the help they need, especially in New Orleans. And that is unacceptable."

Unnamed White House officials, quoted in the Washington Post, directed blame at the Louisiana governor, Kathleen Blanco, a Democrat, for being slow to call for outside help and to declare a state of emergency. Ms Blanco, meanwhile, resisted a federal attempt to take over control of local police and national guard units - an attempt some Louisiana officials saw as a political manoeuvre that would help blame the weak response in the first week on the state.

The depth of America's polarisation could prove a bulwark preventing Mr Bush's political support from collapsing altogether. A poll by the Washington Post and ABC News on Friday night, showed that, of those questioned, 46% approved of the way the president had handled the relief efforts while 47% disapproved.

The spotlight began to turn yesterday on Michael Brown, the head of Fema, who had minimal emergency management experience before joining the agency in 2001, and had spent the previous 10 years organising horse shows for the International Arabian Horse Association. Press reports claimed he had had to leave that job because of questions about his performance.

www.guardian.co.uk/katrina/story/0,16441,1562882,00.html

Also in the Guardian:
Disease warning as dysentery cases reported

Lack of clean drinking water increases risk of outbreaks

www.guardian.co.uk/katrina/story/0,16441,1562773,00.html

I can't find a stream or transcript online. It's sitting on my TIVO right now marked do not delete but I have no way to put it onto my hard drive and no place to serve it from anyway. If you do have a recording of it, it starts about 9 minutes in. I've done a hand written transcript, the spelling and punctuation are mine. The bolding is also mine to emphasize what I think is the important part. The BBC announcer was interviewing Lieutenant Commander Sean Kelly whom she referred to as Leftenant Commander. This is the entire interview with no missing context.

Quote:

Announcer: The relief operation is the largest ever conducted in America. It's being coordinated by the US Northern Command in Colorado. Leftenant Commander Sean Kelly explains how the relief effort is being organized.

Kelly: US Northern Command is the command that coordinates the military support for our federal and state agencies. They call up and request a capability and we try and provide that capability, whether it's medical resources, search and rescue helicopters, food, water, transportation, communications; that's what we provide.

A: So it sounds like you're providing a bit of everything. I mean, do you know how much you're actually providing?

K: Right now we've got 4,000 soldiers, sailors, airmen and marine and coast guardsmen supporting this. They've delivered more than 9 million meals, I can't remember how many millions of liters of water.

A: 9 million meals? Do you actually have 9 million meals?

K: It's those "meals ready to eat". The packaged meals that the Army takes out with them out in the field. We have 9 million of 'em ready. I know at least 100,000 went to the Superdome the other night to help the people out there in New Orleans. So they're staged at various places throughout Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana.

A: Now I'm sure you're aware of the criticism that the authorities have been slow to respond to this. When did you get the order to start relief work?

K: NorthCom started planning before the storm even hit. We were ready for the storm when it hit Florida because, as you remember, it crossed the bottom part of Florida, and then we were plaining, you know, once it was pointed towards the Gulf Coast. So what we did was we activated what we call defense coordinating officers to work with the state to say okay, what do you think you'll need, and we set up staging bases that could be started. We had the USS Baton sailing almost behind the hurricane so that after the hurricane made landfall it's search and rescue helicopters would be available almost immediately. So we had things ready. The only caveat is, we have to wait until the President authorizes us to do so. The laws of the United States say that the military can't just act in this fashion, we have to wait for the President to give us permission.

A: Now I gather that your engineers are also involved in pumping some of that flood water out of the areas.

K: Yes, our military personnel are helping to reconstruct the levees which frees up the engineers to start pumping out the waters so that hopefully New Orleans can be high and dry soon enough.

www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=4605183

A black briton expresses the European reaction

Postby antiaristo » Mon Sep 05, 2005 7:14 am

What Will It Take America?
September 4, 2005, 2:40 pm

As I watch the death and horror of NOLA unfolding, a question has remained at the forefront of my mind: "what will it take America"? Now I get asked by many of you to moderate my language, and for the large part I try, but what has happened in New Orleans has disgusted and angered me, so I am warning everyone, that no, I won`t moderate my language. I won`t hold back on my anger. Bodies floating in the streets of New Orleans doesn`t seem to have an impact, maybe some raw, unedited language may do the trick. This is no time for bullshit sensibilities, people are fucking dying, babies are starving, bodies are rotting in the streets of New Orleans. If you are not offended by this alone, if you are not disgusted and angered to the point where you say "this regime needs to be removed, right now, today, and jailed for crimes against humanity", if you are not motivated to throw this murdering scum into prison, freeze all their assets under their Patriot Act, and then distribute their illegally gotten wealth to the victims of hurricane Katrina, wealth that has been stolen at the expense of 1000s of lives around the world, then quite frankly, you are as evil as they are.

Jesus Christ, I am English, these are not my countrymen dying in this horrific nightmare, how can I be so angry, so distressed, how can I see what is going on to the great nation of America and the American people, yet Americans don`t seem to get it? Did the world slip into a parallel universe where the demons are in control? Look into their eyes, these aren`t human beings running your country, there is no emotion, they have no soul.

People are dying. Babies are dying. People`s lives have been destroyed. People are being shot for simply trying to get food for their starving babies. They are looters apparently, disorderly civilians who shoud be observing "social decency". You filthy disgusting pigs, you fat bloated liars, you callous, inhuman, evil motherfuckers. These people are desperate. They are trying to save their families. There but for the grace of God go I, but I tell you what, if I was in their situation, and my baby was dying from hunger, in diapers that were 3 days old, and my wife was dying through dehydration and starvation, and all that stood between me and their survival was a fucking window in a Walmart, guess what, I would kick the fucking windows in and do exactly what those poor people are doing. Law and order? Fuck law and order. Do you understand, fuck law and order, fuck your bullshit social decency, fuck your bull shit laws, my family are dying, and I am going to save them and god help anyone who gets in my way. Jesus Christ, what has gone wrong with Americans? I turned on the radio on Wednesday, to hear a bunch of white middle class rednecks bitching about the price of oil and condemning the "looters". PEOPLE ARE FUCKING DYING FROM STARVATION AND DEHYDRATION IN AN AMERICAN CITY IN 2005. No political correctness can change this simple fact. PEOPLE ARE DYING.

"Noone could have known that the levees would burst". Yeah right, and noone could have known that 4 planes would have been used by missiles, noone could have known that Iraqis would rise up to defend their country in an illegal war, noone could have known that US soldiers and Iraqi citizens would die from Depleted Uranium, noone could have known that undermanning the military in Iraq and sending them into a combat scene, ill equipped and without adequate armour, would result in 2000 deaths, and noone could have known that by giving disgusting tax cuts to the top 1% of people in America would have increased the budget defecit. Noone could have known that when a man`s family is at risk, he will do whatever it takes to protect them, and that includes smashing the windows of Walmart and stealing food, which by the way, as everyone seems to have forgotten, would be rotten by now anyways. When are the American people going to stand up and say we`ve had enough of these lies masquarading as excuses?.

I have sat here, an outside observer, and made the same statement over and over again, after every criminal act committed by this evil bunch of demons on the American people, namely "this will wake the American people up". An election stolen - "this will wake the American people up". 3000 dead in New York - "this will wake the American people up". 2000 US soldiers dead for a lie - "this will wake the American people up". 100,000 mudered by the Bush junta in Iraq - "this will wake the American people up". Poverty rises for the 5th consecutive time in America - "this will wake the American people up". Now, and I am going to make a prediction, 50,000 dead in New Orleans and I am saying it again, "this will wake the American people up". I still wait. I still wait.

This was Bush`s comment about New Orleans - "I don't think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees," . Now read this - The storm hit Breton Sound with the fury of a nuclear warhead, pushing a deadly storm surge into Lake Pontchartrain. The water crept to the top of the massive berm that holds back the lake and then spilled over. Nearly 80 percent of New Orleans lies below sea level—more than eight feet below in places—so the water poured in. A liquid brown wall washed over the brick ranch homes of Gentilly, over the clapboard houses of the Ninth Ward, over the white-columned porches of the Garden District, until it raced through the bars and strip joints on Bourbon Street like the pale rider of the Apocalypse. As it reached 25 feet (eight meters) over parts of the city, people climbed onto roofs to escape it. Thousands drowned in the murky brew that was soon contaminated by sewage and industrial waste. Thousands more who survived the flood later perished from dehydration and disease as they waited to be rescued. It took two months to pump the city dry, and by then the Big Easy was buried under a blanket of putrid sediment, a million people were homeless, and 50,000 were dead.It was the worst natural disaster in the history of the United States..

Sounds like a report from a current news cast doesn`t it? Except it is from a piece by National Geographic from 11 months ago. II FUCKING MONTHS AGO. In 2001, FEMA warned the Bush junta that the biggest disaster that could happen in America was a hurricane hit on New Orleans. I knew on the Wednesday before the hurricane hit, that New Orleans was in Katrina`s sights, on Saturday night before the hurricane hit, Bush declared a State of Emergency in Mississippi and Louisiana. THE FUCKERS KNEW AND DID NOTHING ABOUT IT, and then they go on TV and lie, without any conscience, they lie. These are not people, they are demons, getting off on death and suffering.

Hey everything is ok now though right? The superdome was finally evacuated. America, you can go back to stuffing your faces on Labour day, the superdome was evacuated. Whoopee Fucking Doo. Lets have a fucking superdome party, and ignore the 100,00 people still trapped in that festering sewer that New Orleans has become, lets ignore the 10s of 1000s of dead people floating in the cesspit of death that New Orleans streets have become. Labour Day should have been declared a national day of mouring. No civilised society parties when people are dying in their country. Do you realise the message this is sending to the world? We don`t care about our own brothers and sisters. We don`t care about babies starving in the streets. Americans don`t care.

What does it take America? What is the event that makes you realise that your country is in the hands of demons, evil, heartless disgusting pieces of filth, that will let your fellow citizens die in the streets of New Orleans? Do you honestly believe this won`t at some point happen to you? Are you that stupid and naiive? Is it because 90% of the faces you see in New Orleans, wading through a putrid filth trying to find food and medicine for their babies are black? Is that it? Because you are white, you think it will never happen to you? You forget the lessons of history.

In 1938, Adolph Hitler annexed Austria. The world sat back and appeased him. It wasn`t going to happen to them, it was other people. Then in 1939, Hitler annexed Czechoslavakia. Europeans weren`t worried though, because it didn`t effect them, it was other people. Then in late 1939 Hitler annexed Poland. At that point, the world woke up, too late, and war against Hitler was declared, and for the next 6 years the world was at war, with over 250,000 Americans dying for Freedom and Democracy. Now Americans sit back and hand over their freedom to the Bush junta, without a fight, and in doing so they denegrate the memories of those soldiers who died fighting in the fields of Flanders so that Europe would remain free, so that future generations of Americans would be able to live in a safe world.

What is going to be your Poland America? When do you stop appeasing this brutal murderous regime? What does it take? 100,000 deaths in New Orleans obviously doesn`t matter does it? No, so long as you have your SUV`s and your obese lifestyles, you can turn a blind eye to what is going on in New Orleans today. Hell, with traitourous bastards like Hannity and Limbaugh, and whores of Satan like Coulter, you can phone in and even rationalise your disgusting apathy on air.

This blog is read by people from over 80 countries. I am asking everyone reading this, to kick the fuck off. Don`t wait, do it now, today. Not violently, I don`t advocate anything other non-violent protest. Whatever country you live in, email your media outlets and demand they get the truth about New Orleans. Demand that they cover it with brutal honesty. The people of the world need to be motivated in a way they were over the Tsunami. Bush cannot be allowed to hide this disaster of such magnitude. The real face of George Bush and his evil demonic scum masquerading as politicians in America needs to be exposed to the world, so the world can see, once and for all what a monster this man is. When the outrage from every civilised human being in every country reaches a cruschendo, when the outcry becomes deafening, then maybe America will wake up.

Peace
www.djpauledge.com/blog.php?id=109

Your long lost brother, Starman?
