Just returned from a brief attendance at the demo (first 45 minutes). it is going up, and many many more are among those who will not demonstrate, but who feel a growing anger. they will not demonstrate because there is no point in that. <br><br>comparing this to 400,000 in 82, who didn't make a difference TOO, this is not great news. but, it seems that this time, the arab politicians are in the lead and they are more energetic than us. the major part of the israeli jews are very worn out, scared, and jaded. (the dissidents). Many are disempowered, like me, financially, and so they feel robbed and tired, and are not supported for a civil struggle. The american "softening" was very successful, namely, the 5 years sharon/ Netanyahu reign of ecomonic terror, has ripped the society/community apart. Its more "the american way" of silencing opposition, namely, a gradual process of economic terror and some "lynching" to make the psychological effect "burnt" deep in the mind. this works far better than official despotic oppression, that only serves to unite the populus against the despots and also looks bad in the international press. <p></p><i></i>

The big-stick of economic coercion, pounding a people with artificially-contrived economic hardship with the promise of a relief spigot IF the 'lesson' is learned -- appease the counterfeit 'American' interest corporatists (with International Banks and MIC and oiligarchy well-embedded).<br><br>If the UN was worth a damn, they'd be protecting Lebanon and bringing pressure to bear on the unacceptable war criminals within the Israeli and US 'leadership' that made this war possible.<br><br>Starman <p></p><i></i>

havanagilla, I keep checking my email, expecting to see notices of anti-war demonstrations here (I'm on all the lists), but there hasn't been a peep out of ANY of the usual demonstration organizers...not one word.<br><br>I think that what was said above about the "softening up" of the populace is true of many here in the US. There's a tremendous amount of burn-out and despair. I know that, as angry as I get at the way the US has just sat mute while Israel bombed Lebanon back into the Middle Ages, I only really spoke out a few times when out in public. Like at the gym, I heard a stupid upscale Republican woman make a remark about "Arabs grubbing around in the sand" and how much "more like us" the Israeli's are....so I piped up and really let her have it and noticed that all the other women there joined me.<br><br>But when she'd left in a huff we got to talking and we were all really wondering where all the anti-war protests are...???
