Putting the political onto walls including the new berlin wall the Israeli govt seems so proud of. I think if this guy was to try this in the states in the present political climate he'd get a very long stretch in the pokey.
www.banksy.co.uk/menu.html

Edited by: friend catcher at: 4/13/06 3:15 pm

This is honestly the best stuff I've seen in years. I've always adored grafitti, but it is usually not so well crafted and droll. friendcatcher, have you seen this guy's stuff in the streets? Besides the pink bow on the war helicopter my favorite is "I'm out of bed and dressed, what more do you want?" I think I love the insolence, and crisp lines.

I see a little "V" potential in this guy, without the vendetta part. Actually, I see a little Banksy potential in that "V" character...

Y'know, this guy's site kind of haunted me last night. I ended up writing a bunch of aborted posts for this board then went to bed feeling really glum.

Here's the question: Why on earth isn't there more art happenning under this regime? And by art I mean the sort of stuff that begs questions, infuriates and ignites us. the sort of art that seemed to be everywhere in the sixties and seventies. Where's the angry music? Where are the spokespeople? Where are the poets? The visionaries?

In all my travels and all my reading I've always been lead to believe that great art is supposed to bloom in opposition to something... Well? Where is it then?

We've got almost nothing but escapist music filling the airwaves and - truth be told - the underground scene isn't much better. God forbid that anyone should speak out against the PTB!

Our biggest stars who claim a conscience are a joke. Chrissy Martin writes a mean pop song for sure but don't anyone expect him to actually write a lyric that means a damn thing not when he can protest the injustices of the world by drawing two felt tip stripes on the back of his hand... Bono? Don't get me started on that prick.

Film?

Theatre?

Art?

I've been reading Frank Bidart's poetry lately... he's old enough to be my Father and then some.

Where's the visceral, full frontal attack? Where is it?

If the media won't save us, then we have to rely on art. And if art won't save us... waht then?

I stand corrected.

Apparently Neil Young is about to release an album called Life in War that features the song "Impeach the President".

Well, at least the 60-somethings have some spirit left.

It occured to me that outside the uk he may not be well known and was hoping there were more of the same ilk elsewhere. They were quite common in London and brighton but i think the police and councils like to get rid of them super fast. .www.artofthestate.co.uk/b...banksy.htm

Take heart, there's always beautiful, powerful art being made. Mostly you need to have mason connections for it to be widely known. There is that genre of "brut Art" done by self-taught, intense and crazy people working endlessly for years. These works are often only noticed when the artist dies. If we're lucky somebody stops the apartment superfrom cleaning it out or the relatives from destroying the work. There are really lots of unknown, misunderstood geniuses creating great work; they are just hidden or stamped down from recognition. But they do it anyway, because they have to.
