The decision to join the campaign, until Israel recognize the Palestinians' right to self-determination, was supported by an overwhelming majority of the delegates to the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) at the Ontario convention in Ottawa this Saturday. The Ontario body represents more than 200,000 workers. The global anti-Israel campaign, which started last July, has received support from many North American churches and some 20 Quebec organizations, the CBC reported. According to the report, CUPE also condemned what they called Israel's "apartheid wall," saying it is illegal under international law. "Boycott, divestment and sanction worked to end apartheid in South Africa," Katherine Nastovski, chairwoman of the CUPE Ontario international solidarity committee, said. "We believe the same strategy will work to enforce the rights of Palestinian people, including the right of refugees to return to their homes and properties," she added. I am sure it was the "spin" with the National Post...that made people understand that if there is a vacuum of public opinion/activity, someone else will USE it. So now, when the gov is in the hands of the bushco, the canadians remember they can do something other than bitch and connive against the innocent. All in all, with the Brittish boycot today, and this, not a bad day. Let's hope its the first step in more commitment to bring peace here, in HONEST and courageous - widespread, and pupular, civil protest against the israeli oppression, backed by the USA.

Hava, it was so refreshing to read some good news, finally. Everything else I read or see on the tv news is discouraging, hopeless, demoralizing. Not only that terrible crimes are being committed against helpless people, but that nobody's doing anything about it. Well, unless you count the accompanying fog of moronic platitudes... Canada used to be a bright light back in the sixties and seventies -- far from perfect, but damn, damn good. Canadians are by and large, decent, moral, intelligent people. I'm so proud that some Canadians have found the voice and courage to express their compassion and defence of human rights, in concrete terms. Hey, maybe that appalling little man, Stephen Harper, actually got through when he said, "God bless Canada!" I get so few chances to get excited at anything in the news, allow me to indulge: "YAHOOOOO!" <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/happy.gif ALT=":D">
