Uri Avneri, peace activist, journalist, today reveals that in all likelihood general Moshe Dayan assassinated his competitor, general Assaf Simhoni, for credit over the 67 victory. Simhoni died in a mysterious airplane crash, on his way to meet the chief of staff and minister of defense, with maps and testimonies showing that Dayan was not around, and not to be found by anyone, during the critical stages of the war.

Avneri is also disclosing a personal encounter with Dayan's violence. In the late fifties, when Avneri challenged the government's policy, as a journalist, 2 anonymous thugs attacked him in his car and tried to pull him out of the car. Failing to get him out through the window, they broke both his arms, in a mafia-like "punishment" using the handle of a shovel.
Avneri is now saying, that the late General Rehavam Zeevi, told him back then, that Dayan was the person behind the thugs.

--

I love reading Uri Avnery's articles, he writes so well, he's funny and insightful and very, very informative. I remember, during the initial trauma, just after the September 11 attacks and all the brouhaha about Osama bin Laden and the Taliban, and Afghanistan being the headquarters of terrorism, he published an article talking about the oil pipeline from the Caspian region through Afghanistan. While everyone else was still spinning around trying to get oriented, he was looking at a map.

He's very cool. I have to say here that I don't agree with everything he says, but he is a hero in so many ways.
