DNA & LSD: Grave Mysteries

Postby new world disorder » Sun Mar 05, 2006 1:30 am

in relation to " Grave Mysteries (Part Two)" and the psychedelic/genetics connection therein, this bit of info is useful in further investigating those mysteries:

Nobel Prize genius Crick was high on LSD
when he discovered the secret of life

www.hallucinogens.com/lsd...crick.html

Francis Crick, the Nobel Prize-winning father of modern genetics, was under the influence of LSD when he first deduced the double-helix structure of DNA nearly 50 years ago.

The abrasive and unorthodox Crick and his brilliant American co-researcher James Watson famously celebrated their eureka moment in March 1953 by running from the now legendary Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge to the nearby Eagle pub, where they announced over pints of bitter that they had discovered the secret of life.

...

'Dick Kemp told me he met Francis Crick at Cambridge. Crick had told him that some Cambridge academics used LSD in tiny amounts as a thinking tool, to liberate them from preconceptions and let their genius wander freely to new ideas. Crick told him he had perceived the double-helix shape while on LSD.

Damn! All I ever discovered on LSD was how bitch'n my hand was.
Last I checked there was no Nobel Prize for that.

What A Dummy!!!

Postby Floyd Smoots » Sun Mar 05, 2006 5:57 am

Baja, I, Oldbot, only tried it once in the U.S. Navy in, of all places, Athens, Greece on a weekend liberty. What is wrong with you?? It's always about you isn't it??? Well, smart boy, it's NOT about you and your stupid selfish "hand"! It's about the warp and woof in the threads of my royal blue corduroy Levi jeans, and the marvelous miniature city streets and traffic I discovered therein. Sheesh!!! What a self-centered person! Save up your money and "Buy A Clue", dude!!!

Levi's Rule, Baja's hand droolz!!!!!!!

Unfortunately, her reputation did not precede her. James Watson's unflattering portrayal of Franklin in his account of the discovery of DNA's structure, entitled "The Double Helix," depicts Franklin as an underling of Maurice Wilkins, when in fact Wilkins and Franklin were peers in the Randall laboratory. And it was Franklin alone whom Randall had given the task of elucidating DNA's structure.

The technique with which Rosalind Franklin set out to do this is called X-ray crystallography. With this technique, the locations of atoms in any crystal can be precisely mapped by looking at the image of the crystal under an X-ray beam. By the early 1950s, scientists were just learning how to use this technique to study biological molecules. Rosalind Franklin applied her chemist's expertise to the unwieldy DNA molecule. After complicated analysis, she discovered (and was the first to state) that the sugar-phosphate backbone of DNA lies on the outside of the molecule. She also elucidated the basic helical structure of the molecule.

After Randall presented Franklin's data and her unpublished conclusions at a routine seminar, her work was provided - without Randall's knowledge - to her competitors at Cambridge University, Watson and Crick. The scientists used her data and that of other scientists to build their ultimately correct and detailed description of DNA's structure in 1953. Franklin was not bitter, but pleased, and set out to publish a corroborating report of the Watson-Crick model. Her career was eventually cut short by illness. It is a tremendous shame that Franklin did not receive due credit for her essential role in this discovery, either during her lifetime or after her untimely death at age 37 due to cancer.
