Cthulhu Mainstream

Has anyone seen the Stephne King adapted show called Nightmares and Dreamscapes? I have only seen one episode they aired a couple weeks ago that had the premise of a couple visiting a British town, they are warned by the townsfolk of a certain part called Crouch End. In this certain part of town they encounter many strange things and apparently that part of town was built on an ancient druidic sacrificial ground called a towen. Long story short, they run across a street that is lined with giant circus style signs with the names of the ancient Lovecraft gods like Cthulhu, Yossogoth, and etc....Then at the end of the show a tentacled (god) bursts through the ground and devours the man.........the lady wakes up in a police station lucid, but everyone just gives her that knowing look...

My question is why is this premise being dispalyed in a prominent time slot on TNT? Is this something more sinister we are being desensitized or acclimated to? Thoughts, from Jeff especially, would be most welcome on this. If yuo have seen this episode please help me convey the strangeness of its placement on TV?

King has often referenced Lovecraft in his writing, as have most modern writers of horror fiction.

It's not strange or disturbing at all that a modern pulp/pop sci-fi/horror fiction writer would make reference to the rather well known (and fictitious) sci-fi/horror mythos created by his august pulp/pop predecessor.

Futhermore, you can't "popularize" something that's already wildly popular. I mean, they make comic books and videogames about this crap. It's hardly deep dark esoterica!

I second that,... i mean, what world are you living in where it comes as a surprise that trash horror entertainment should contain Cthulu references? Are you under the impression that the Cthulu mythos was ever anything else, didn't start out as pulp horror fiction?

Everyone just refers to Cthulu cos Lovecraft was the first one to describe the tentacles. Before that it was horned things with goats legs or something, but it was as if all evil belonged on earth and was as prosaic as is possble. HPL talked about the things from "outside" and really put a useful context on it.

If some other clown had done it and called Cuthulu Fred, we'd all be spinning about about the Strephen king story with the fredian monsters.

But we would be talking about the same things.

In that contect think about casalauro's octopus...
