'I would love to see a serious discussion about this...'

Me too, dbeach.
but you know there's lots of problems with that.
mostly, however, it gets down to 'perceptual' issues.
had to laugh at Jeff's blog today, not that there weren't some really good comments, and not because, just as another little side issue, the ANSWER thing has links back to Nick Berg, or more precisely his father.
like with MUFON, those mass abductions are obviously paying off.
and people can't figure out what's up with Lovelock!
you are all on remote control until you start choosing not to be. right and left to where they meet with Genghis 'round the back and all the fuzzy grey mushiness in the middle. all elements of the 'experiment' and 'the farm'. all property of 'the company'.
"they gave us their mind". well, that's one way of putting it.
I'm not holding my breath tho. 'humanity', as a group, made that choice a long time ago, and has consistently lumped to stay 'captivated'.
c'est la vie.

I think Richard Dolan's book: UFO's and the National Security State is a good one. I think he said that he started out to do a book on the National Security State and got intrigued by the UFO stuff and started off in that direction. Volume 2 should come out soon.

keyholepublishing.com/

Check out his essays, as he really weaves together the two subjects of his title rather well.

Generally speaking there is so much disinfo in the UFO research community I got really discouraged. I THINK Dolan is sincere, but anyway, he has so much material culled from FOIA documents that there's no need to take his word for too much. I think people uninterested in UFO's could learn much to. The way the CIA simply took over UFO organizations like NICAP is textbook. They just put some of their own people on the board and emasculate the thing from the inside. Not really even challenging.

It's also instructive to see how such tactics, along with debunking operations such as BlueBook, were part of a concerted effort to put UFOs into the "ridiculous" category. It was truly masterful. That this was done is beyond question...even J. Allen Hynek was involved to some extent. The official reason was fear that Soviet's would exploit mass hysteria over UFO's to launch a nuclear attack. This official reason never made much sense to me and a more likely explanation is simply to make sure whatever level of knowledge the government has (or even lack of knowledge and impotence in the face of a real phenomenon) did not get out.

This tactic is one that is repeated over and over...JFK, 9/11. On the one hand, you have the CIA types involved in "debunking" and on the other you have CIA types setting up fake organizations pretending to go after the truth. In the case of UFO's I think the CIA also took advantage of already existing UFO cults or created some of their own to do some experiments in that area as well.

Finally, in ways too complicated to get at here, there's a weird connection to UFO's...particularly early contactees like George Adamski and fascist movements such as the Silver Shirts. Given CIA involvement and Paperclip Nazis, I guess that's not surprising.

Truly thru the looking glass when you try to get a handle on this stuff.
