positive thinking

Postby friend catcher » Fri Jun 30, 2006 2:52 pm

Positive thinking might enable you top succeed at a personal task or it might lead you to heroic failure, take your pick.

In the UK we have a mountaineering/climbing magazine called 'High'. Every month the first few pages contain the obituaries of positive thinking climbers. Further into the mag are lots of interesting (to me) articles on cautious climbers who achieve great things.

In the UK we have a scuba/diving magazine called 'Diver'. Every month the last few pages contain the obituaries of positive thinking divers...........

Well, 4911 was quite clear...the napalmee "thought" himself into being Napalmed. And you praised that statement.

You can retract it if you want, but don't pretend like what you just said is the same as what you originally praised.

the nature of quantum

Postby 5E6A » Fri Jun 30, 2006 8:47 pm

It occurs to me that much of what has been written on this subject is actually a huge misunderstanding of what quantum physics has outlined. It is nice to believe that positive thought can indeed shape reality. In some respects it can and does. However, to hold that through willful thought one brings about certain outcomes is not what quantum mechanics reveals about the universe. A short parable:

One finds oneself in a darkened alley late at night looking down the barrel of a gun. Refusing to hand over one's wallet, the junkie decides to shoot you. Quantum mechanics states that each particle of that bullet exists at once here and elsewhere. It is just a probability, accompanied by the act of observation, that the bullet resides within the reality you do. One could try and believe that through positive thought that a manipulation of the quantum will allow the bullet to pass through you ala Vincent and Jules in Pulp fiction. This is where it all breaks down.

Remember that bit about probability? Therein lies the rub. The possibility of every particle of that bullet residing elsewhere as opposed to here is impossible. While it may happen that some of the particles do indeed decide to exist elsewhere at the moment of impact, no matter how much practice or thought you put into altering the quantum, the bullet still hits your forehead, slicing through skin, pulverizing bone, and liquifies your gray matter.

People do not bring on or change their reality through manipulation of the quantum. As a part of their circumstance they do shape interaction through sentiment or emotional state. This is vastly different than aligning particles to produce an outcome. Please read some more on the nature of probability and the quantum before jumping to the conclusion that it is within each of us to change reality through those means.

Edited by: 5E6A at: 6/30/06 6:48 pm

hm, my client has just assured me that the process is underway and that ill have my money on tuesday, latest. So nar ne nar nar to YOU all.

No I know that it was a coincidence. (I did ask the universe to speed it all up though, sacrificing a black chicken and a frog at midnight on a tombstone by fullmoon had nothing to do with it.) [kidding]

So perhaps, lets talk about coincidence while were at it ... bringing us to synchronicity. How can it be that I am thinking some thoughts about , say, pink elephants, and I walk into to a store somewhere, and a song about pink elephants is playing on the radio there.

This kind of thing happens to me all the time. Why/how?

How can it be that what I am thinking is extremely often mirrored in my surroundings to a level that I should have no control over, yet that somehow seems to be connected to me?

www.spaceandmotion.com/Ph...an-QED.htm

Richard Feynman is my touchstone where Physics is concerned. He provides illuminating explanations of Quantum theory and never hides behind jargon or terminology. His books sold in the millions because they were understandable without compromising the theory.Whereas many people struggled to understand 'a brief history of time' by Hawking, although that doesn't mean the book is bad.

I can't recommend Feynman enough, every school should have his work on the curriculum

hey thanks freindcatcher, nice one... good to see someone on this thread is into more than nitpicking and derailment attempts whilst masturbating on their own egos and submitting to a herd mentality Always nice to know there are people who are willing to explore a subject with an open mind...

Thats what makes this blog so different from say the GOP one.

Edited by: 4911 at: 7/1/06 9:56 am
