Crop circles mystify many

Sunday, August 20, 2006

GENESEO, Ill., — The crop circles at Jim Stahl’s farm appeared as they always do — out of nowhere.

Amid a 90-acre field of soybeans Stahl discovered the oddity Saturday morning. He called the Henry County Sheriff’s Department, he said, but wasn’t entirely sure what to say.

“I said, ‘This is not an emergency, but I think you might want to take a look,’” he said.

About 11 a.m. Saturday, Sheriff Gib Cady issued a news release, treating the mysterious appearance with levity.

“The Henry County Sheriff’s office is investigating some damage to soybeans west of Geneseo,” he said. “The damage was several circles in the middle of the soybean field with no obvious explanation.

“If anyone happens to see a UFO with attached soybeans, please contact Henry County Crime Stoppers.”

The scene was so bizarre, Cady said, that the responding deputy wasn’t sure how to handle it.

“He called me up and said, ‘I haven’t got a clue, and I don’t even know how to write the report,’” he said. “We joke about it, but we can’t explain it.

“There’s no path to the circles and no path from them,” he said. “There is just no sensible, reasonable, intelligent explanation for these things.”

Stahl had no explanation, either.

The five circles in his soybean field create a geometric pattern. Three of the circles are the same size — about 50 feet in diameter — and are connected like beans in a pod. The other two circles are half the size of the others and flank them on either side. They appear to be precisely the same distance from the main circle.

“My neighbor said he noticed them Thursday,” Stahl said. “The beans aren’t dead. They’re just lying in a perfect, clockwise circle.

“Even though they’re laid over, they’re still growing,” he said. “When I first saw them I thought some kids had driven into the field, but then I couldn’t find any tracks leading in or out of the field.

“Then I saw that the circles made a perfect design and the beans aren’t broken.”

...

www.qctimes.net

Yes, but as far as I can see there are no tire tracks, and the beans were not mowed, just "knocked down". What do you make of that?

The more "boring" the crop circle the less likely to be a hoax. Add to that, if you trust this source, that there was no path that a hoaxer trampled down on his way to and from the circles gives it a bump. Or not. It isn't very complex so all you need is one 16 year old, some twine and a 3ft length of 2X4 and you're set. that's the problem with crop circles, they are too easy to make.

That we don't have more says something... like our kids are too busy playing video games... or too lazy to go outside... or passed out in a sugar coma... or all of the above. Besides, Illinois is the heart of Bush's base. They are almost as nutty as Kansas.

bvonahsen, you have totally ruined my fantasy that the midwest counts one little bit in the bigger picture. Thanks a whole bunch. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/mad.gif ALT=">:">

I'm not sure how you mean that.

I didn't mean to insult anyone if that's what you mean. But if you remember that episode of "King of the Hill" where there were protests against holloween because of it's "satanic" origins and they replace it with more appropriate "Christian" activities.... you are describing a good deal of Illinois. And just so no one gets left out, Minnesota too.

Minnesota has just approved electronic voting machines, we refused to till now. Just in time for the most hated governor in our states' history to just barely win another term.

Just gently pulling on your leg, dear. Your explanation is so.....logical and easy. ~sigh~

Love Minnesota, lived there for years, have my own little Minnesota ghost story that I think I told here once. Not an Ole and Lena one. (Love Ole and Lena, btw, miss them very much.)

Edited by: chiggerbit at: 8/21/06 10:51 pm

Minnesota and electronic voting machines

Postby yathrib » Tue Aug 22, 2006 11:53 am

Bvonahsen:

Are you saying electronic voting machines are a *positive* development? The many victims of electronic voter fraud might disagree... And I thought Minnesota was a relatively liberal state.

Quote:
Are you saying electronic voting machines are a *positive* development?

Ummmm... no, I was being sarcastic, which I do know doesn't translate well... but that is my personality.

No, my first though when I saw this in the Strib was... "the fix is in." The next was "Why vote?" which is one reason that they do that, to alienate voters.

Pawlenty is deeply hated here among the people I talk to and I don't get to the burbs so there is that bias. In general I would give Pawlenty low odds on getting re-elected. The the addition of the electronic voting machine I think his odds are now %100. They will just make it look close, but the end result is not in question.
