US and UK are far in the lead

Postby LoganSquare » Mon Aug 28, 2006 11:49 am

Pentagon has estimated that 320 tons of depleted uranium was fired by US and UK units in the first Gulf War. Some experts put the numbers as high as 800 tons. U.S. and British warplanes dropped about 31,000 DU shells of various calibers on Kosovo and Serbia during the 1999 bombing campaign. Approximately 2000 tons or more were detonated in the second gulf war.

After the "Shock and Awe" campaign in Iraq in 2003, very
fine particles of depleted uranium were captured with larger sand and dust particles in filters in Britain. These particles traveled in 7-9 days from Iraqi battlefields as far as 2400 miles away. The radiation measured in the atmosphere quadrupled within a few weeks after the beginning of the 2003 campaign, and at one of the 5 monitoring locations, the
levels twice required an official alert to the British environment Agency.
. . . .
Within nine days of the start of the Iraq war on March 19, 2003, higher levels of uranium were picked up on five sites in Berkshire.[1

London Times

This is such earth shattering information that many
officials in England were immediately forced to move into denial mode. The
Ministry of Defense refused to acknowledge the possibility of any
connection between the use of atomic weaponry in Iraq and these readings in
England saying the uranium was of a "natural origin" and there was no
evidence that depleted uranium had reached Britain from Iraq. Perhaps there
was a volcano eruption that went unnoticed or a flyby UFO with a
radioactive tail; when it comes to the military any excuse but the truth will
do.

According to Dr. Chris Busby and Dr. Saoirse Morgan, who
forced the British government to release the above information[11]
published in January of this year. "On the basis of the mean increase in
uranium in air of about 500nBq/m3 we use respiration data on standard man to
calculate that each person in the area inhaled some 23 million uranium
particles of diameter 0.25 microns. As far as we know, this is the
first evidence that uranium aerosols from battle use have been shown to
travel so far." In their earth shaking report they make it clear that the
"evidence from the present analysis is implicit in the results; i.e.
the increases found clearly demonstrate that the uranium particles are
capable of long distance travel."[12]

www.mideastbeat.com/2006/...l_war.html

re:lasers

Postby juno jones » Mon Aug 28, 2006 3:49 pm

I once worked for a woman who was from a military family and after 10-11 years had risen to the rank of captain before she resigned her commission immediately after she got home from Reagan's 'little war' Panama. She was a firm, yet impartial boss and it was easy to see she had military training and had been a good officer. The only time I got 'cozy' with her I asked why, if she had thought of the military as her life and career had she quit so abruptly. Her reply was (to the best of my memory), "I can't really go into detail, I don't want to. It's just that in Panama we were using lasers against machetes. I saw things I never want to see again..."

Panama

There are accounts of experimental weapons in the documentary film "Panama Deception" that are very similar to accounts coming out of Lebanon that may be due to lasers.

As evil as these weapons are along with others such cluster bombs, napalm, phosphorous, etc. DU stands alone as what can only be considered a death wish. That Israel who seems to value the lives of its own citizens and soldiers so highly would use it on a close neighbor knowing they will also suffer the direct effects due to winds and fallout is incomprehensible.

www.heritage.org/Research...1.cfmViability of DEWs (article)…Because they were invented several decades ago, lasers are the most mature of the DEW technolo gies. Laser dazzlers—devices that use laser light to temporarily blind sensors, optics, and personnel— are already available for law enforcement and mili tary use. In 1995, the Chinese military marketed the ZM-87 laser interference device, a tripod-mounted battlefield laser dazzler designed to blind enemy soldiers and optics temporarily. In March 2003, North Korea may have used a ZM-87 to “paint” two U.S. Apache helicopters patrolling the Demilitarized Zone.[7]The two U.S. laser weapons systems closest to actual deployment are the Tactical High-Energy Laser (THEL) and the Airborne Laser (ABL).Development of the THEL began in 1996 as a joint program between the United States and Israel to develop a laser system capable of shooting down Katyusha rockets, artillery, and mortar shells. The THEL system uses radar to detect and track incom ing targets. This information is then transferred to an optical tracking system, which refines the target tracking and positions the beam director. The deu terium fluoride chemical laser fires, hitting the rocket or shell and causing it to explode far short of its intended target.[8]In August 2004, the THEL system shot down multiple mortar rounds during testing. However, the Army felt the fixed-base laser system was too large and cut funding for the program after the demonstration phase. Research was also conducted on a mobile version of the THEL called the MTEL.[9]The ABL is a system that uses a megawatt chemical laser mounted on a modified Boeing 747 to shoot down theater ballistic missiles. The system consists of several modules: an infrared detection system to detect the missile’s launch; the Tracking Illumination Laser (TILL); the Beacon Illuminator Laser (BILL); and the Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser (COIL).[1 Once tracked by the TILL, the BILL measures the atmospheric distortion between the COIL and the missile. These data are then passed on to the mirror system, which makes appropriate corrections so that, when the COIL fires, maximum energy is transmitted to the target. The skin of the missile heats up, melts, and deforms, and the target breaks up in midair.[11]The megawatt-class laser was tested at full power in early 2006. The Beacon Illuminator Laser system, which measures and corrects for atmospheric distortion, has also been shipped to Boeing for testing.[12] A complete prototype ABL weapons system will be assembled in 2006.[13]A related project is the Advanced Tactical Laser (ATL) system, which uses a less powerful version of the ABL’s COIL laser, instead of missiles, to attack ground targets. The laser is being built and will be tested in mid-2006. Boeing has received a C-130H transport aircraft from the Air Force and is modifying it for installation of the laser system. The full system will be fitted to the aircraft by 2007 and test-fired against ground targets.[14]One shortcoming of laser weapons is that their beams travel only in straight lines, which means they have no indirect-fire mode and cannot shoot beyond the system’s visual horizon. The DOD Office of Force Transformation (OFT), in conjunc tion with the Air Force Research Laboratory, is developing the Tactical Relay Mirror System (TRMS), which would use a mirror system mounted on an aerostat or UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) to redirect the beams from laser weapons such as the ATL and ABL. Design specifications are already being determined.[15]

2002 Defense Watch article on DEWs in Iraq

Postby jc » Mon Aug 28, 2006 6:10 pm

November 6, 2002 13:12

Coming Soon: Electromagnetic Warfare against Iraq
By J. David Galland

From the F-117A Stealth Fighter in Panama, to the Tomahawk cruise missile in Gulf War I, to the B-2 stealth bomber in Kosovo, to the Hellfire-armed Predator UAV in Afghanistan, every major U.S. military action in recent years has seen the debut of a major new weapons system that significantly altered the face of combat.

The anticipated war with Iraq will be no exception: Should we go to war against Saddam Hussein, we will see the first widespread use of high-power directed energy or microwave weapons. These weapons are insidiously effective because they produce a split-second electromagnetic spike of energy that is powerful enough to damage electronic components and scramble the memory of any computer system.

The cumulative destruction and confusion this new weapon will cause will be mind-boggling.

Microwave weaponry is currently designed for use from either a cruise missile or unmanned aerial vehicles. British researchers who have worked closely with American scientists describe a directed energy weapon in an unmanned combat vehicle as the ideal mode of delivery.

One British aerospace official, speaking anonymously, explained that utilizing a UAV poses no risk to a pilot, and the weapon has a greater degree of accuracy in contrast to conventional cluster bombs or other explosives that can cause significant collateral damage.

Modern strategic air attack theory is based upon what is known as Warden's Five Rings Model (WARDEN95,) after Air Force strategist Col. John A. Warden III, a primary architect of the 1991 Gulf War air campaign. This theory, and its accompanying priority target matrix, identifies five levels and classifications of targets that would be ultimately crippled or destroyed by directed energy weapons.

The priority level of targeting ascends from the lowest precedence category, fielded military forces. The second-highest category comprises the general population, and the third constitutes the Iraqi transportation and communications infrastructure. Fourth is the essential economic infrastructure of Iraq, with the national leadership and the Iraqi command-and-control network as the fifth, and highest-priority, target.

How would U.S. military commanders actually employ microwave weaponry against Iraq?

The top priority will be the neutralization of Iraqi command and leadership. This would be accomplished by the electronic destruction of key computer equipment in government or palace buildings, military command posts and upper-echelon headquarters. Other priority targets will include government television and radio broadcasting facilities, telephone switches, microwave and satellite communications, and key strategic command/control/communications (C3) posts and nodes.

The second tasking would be for the destruction of all automated machinery in the target zone, specifically including all processing controls that deal with banking and finance. The Iraqi finance industry constitutes a special case, as the destruction of the electronic infrastructure can yield rapid economic dislocation. This can in turn produce large systemic effects across the whole economy, including elements that are not vulnerable to direct electromagnetic attack.

(For nations that rely on agriculture, mining or trade for a large proportion of the their gross domestic product, their financial centers and stock markets are prime candidates for electromagnetic attack, since they are usually geographically concentrated and typically “soft” targets.)

Yet another spectrum of targets for directed-energy weapons can be found within the Iraqi transportation system. The destruction of road and rail signaling systems, motor vehicle electronic ignition systems (from mopeds to tanks to aircraft) could facilitate highway and rail traffic congestion, preventing the deployment of Iraqi military forces.

Next to last on the target list would be the general Iraqi population. Microwave weapons would not be used to cause civilian casualties, but instead to attack the morale and resolve of the citizenry. All radio and television receivers, all domestic or private computers, and all cellular telephones or cellular communications systems of any nature will seemingly go dead. The use of electromagnetic weapons against urban areas will ensure that the Baath party-line propaganda will not reach the population via means of Iraqi mass media.

Although fielded military forces come in last on Warden’s Five Rings matrix, it is at this level where the U.S. military will deliver the coup de grace against Saddam Hussein. Within Iraq’s residual front-line divisions, embedded computers, military support facilities and tactical battlefield C3 systems will all suddenly go dead.

Iraqi C3 sites and fixed support bases that carry out depot-level maintenance on military equipment, will also constitute valuable targets for directed-energy weapons. (The concentration of computers in both automatic test equipment and administrative and logistic support functions will offer a good return per electromagnetic salvo.)

The ability of current U.S. electromagnetic weapons to achieve hard electrical kills against any non-hardened targets within their lethal “footprints,” means that some target sites may require only electromagnetic attack and not any follow-on strikes with precision-guided munitions or ground troops.

In fact, Central Command planners likely have a goal to strike the maximm number of Iraqi targets in this fashion, relegating the use of conventional munitions on targets only in event of critical military necessity.

Electromagnetic weapons will provide a particularly high payoff should Saddam Hussein proceed with his alleged strategy of withdrawing his military forces back inside Baghdad using the Iraqi capital as an urban battlefield in a last stand against the U.S. military.

Microwave weaponry will enable U.S. commanders to “soften” and control that battlefield well prior to the introduction of ground forces. And should urban combat become inevitable, directed-energy weapons will greatly help to prevent excess casualties among the civilian population, since they are lethal to electronics only.

The military justification for using electromagnetic weapons technology is bolstered by the wide degree of flexibility in its lethal effect. This option would make electromagnetic weapons far more readily applicable to a strategic air attack campaign.

Microwave technology promises to enable U.S. commanders to render Iraq militarily, politically and economically ineffective with little, if any, loss in human life. It is a sure bet that this revolutionary technology – for which there is currently no defense – will define the conduct of Gulf War II.

Directed Energy Viewed as 'Transforming' (Nat Def Mag) October 2002

The United States must speed up development of directed-energy weapons, to stay ahead of potential enemies, said retired Air Force Gen. Ronald Fogleman.

“Directed-energy weapons [such as lasers] will be the cornerstone of America’s arsenal in the 21st century. … [They have] the potential to become the single most transforming weapon,” he told a conference sponsored by the Lexington Institute, a public policy think tank.

Edited by: jc at: 8/28/06 4:15 pm

DU a separate case

Postby LoganSquare » Mon Aug 28, 2006 8:38 pm
DU has to be considered separately--I mean it's basically going to make the Middle East uninhabitable--forever. This is the fruit of the technological culture we are condemning Islam for not accepting and adapting to. It's basically the frosting on the environmental cake.

Thanks jc, and Logan Square, I'll look up that movie...
Yeah, having that conversation with her was a weird moment. I was sure she'd quit the military because of sexual preference and to have her say what she did sorta came out of left field. Nice to see some corroboration of what her story. Oh well, I bet she's happy as hell she's not in for THIS war...
