I saw something odd in the sky last night

Postby Attack Ships on Fire » Sun Aug 27, 2006 4:18 pm

Last evening me and my wife were returning home from an event. We live in a nice suburb on the very outskirts of a large city. After unlocking the door and returning outside to the car to get some things, on the way back my eyes jumped up to the night sky due to a very bright, luminous object that was travelling eastward in the night sky.

When I say bright, I mean *bright*. It was easily as bright as a full moon, but it looked a little bigger than an airplane. There was no way to discern any features, just that it was an amazingly bright ball of light. It almost looked and moved the way a satellite does when you catch one travelling across the sky, if you're out in a dark field or camping. For the record, I'm a little bit of an amateur astronomer and I am pretty certain that this wasn't a satellite, even if it moved a little like one...I have never seen a satellite ever that was this bright. You remember what Venus looks like in the night sky? This thing was brighter than that.

Anyway, I ran back inside to get my wife. She came out and saw it too, now moved a little farther down the sky. As I pointed to it, the first of two very odd things happened.

First, it seemed to change its path. As I thought I saw this happen, my wife was first to ask the question aloud, so both of us seemed to have the impression it moved its course a little.

The second, and more dramatic thing, that this object did was dim itself down until it seemingly disappeared from our sight. In the space of 5 to 10 seconds, I'd guesstimate, it went from being easily the brightest thing in the night sky to gone. The object was still nowhere near the horizon when it vanished from our sight.

We remained outside for a few more minutes but I never saw it again. My wife seemed to think that she could still see something there but very very dim, but it was hard for me to be certain that this thing had stopped and was stationary now.

My gut tells me what I saw wasn't a plane; it moved a little too fast, made no noise, and I can't imagine any plane that had that kind of brilliant light eminating from its tail or the rear of the craft. As well, I'd even say that the light from this object was brighter than a plane's landing lights, and it held steady until it started to dim. I'd also rule out a satellite unless something was in orbit that got hit with an amazing ray of sunlight, but that doesn't make sense. It also doesn't feel right because it didn't move in the same line that a satellite does, and every satellite that I've ever seen has looked like a lesser magnitude star. This object, whatever it was, was bright enough that it caught my eye while I was standing in a well illuminated parking lot where it would have been tough to have seen brigher stars in the sky due to the light pollution.

Added up, what I saw seems to fall within the boundaries of being a UFO, and I do mean unidentified flying object and not a black ops vehicle, spaceship from Zeta Reticuli or anything like that.

One other thing that kind of puzzles me, and disturbs me slightly: after I spotted this thing I took a chance to run inside and grab a second witness to the event. As soon as I returned outside and my wife had identified it in the sky, it seemed to change its direction and to dim from sight...as if it somehow *knew* that it was being watched. Of course it can be coincidence, but you and I both know as being readers of RigInt and curious souls about these strange things that go on, somewhere at the back of my mind I feel that there exists the possibility that it knew that it was being observed. The timing was just unnerving; it shifted its course just as I pointed to it; when my wife said it was changing direction it also began to dim and then vanish from sight.

In any case, thought I'd mention it to the assembled troops. I welcome any suggestions on what it could have been!

Edited by: Attack Ships on Fire at: 8/27/06 2:21 pm

You might submit a report to NUFORC. They're pretty good about trying to eliminate mundane explanations such as satellites and planets.

-Sepka the Space Weasel

Wow, nuforc's database is huge.

thanks for the link Sepka.

I had an interesting sighting earlier this summer. Me and a friend were out back having a smoke at about 11pm, and a light appeared to the east at approx. 30 degrees elevation, a bit dimmer than the landing lights on a plane and changing colors slightly. We watched, and it slowly gained elevation heading west, weaving left and right as it did so. At about 45 degrees elevation, after maybe 3 minutes, it disappeared.

There is an airport in my area, but it's to the north, and I've never seen an airplane weave like that.

If it was the right time and place and an object is high enough I can see how it could have been reflecting the sun. It all depends of course, I would rule this out if you saw it at say... 2am.

The Iridium communications satellites have huge, flat. mirror-like antennae, and can consequently just light up the sky for periods ranging from a few seconds to almost a minute. They're sometimes seen in broad daylight. The ISS also has been known to reflect a lot of sunlight if it's seen at the right angle. Iridiums are generally seen moving on a north-south axis, unless you're in northern Canada or the like. ISS doesn't have quite such an extreme orbit.

www.heavens-above.com/ is a database of bright satellites and spacecraft that should be visible from a given location at a given time. Enter your location and the date, and it will tell you what known objects should have been visible that night.

-Sepka the Space Weasel

Very cool info Sepka, thank you very much! This was precisely the kind of helping hand I was looking for when I posted my story!

I plunked in my location and time information and the closest Iridium satellite "flare" was scheduled to take place at 10:40 that evening, so an hour after I had my sighting. I also checked the magnitude of the flare event (how bright it would be from my position on the ground) and it was pegged at -1, less than the brightness of Sirius. So, at least I can rule out any Iridium satellites as being the culprit!
