Edge of Darkness...

Postby otherGeoff » Sun Oct 23, 2005 12:22 pm

A break from everything.

I was wondering who among us have seen the old BBC mini-series Edge of Darkness, which was written by Troy Kennedy Martin, directed by Martin Campbell, and starred Bob Peck as Craven and Joe Don Baker as Jedburgh, in what I think are the best performances either have ever given. (Music also in part by Eric Clapton...as much a part of the success of this great gem as Knopfler's music was for Local Hero.)

There are some great scences, and some brilliant dialogue. And it is as complex and woven into life in a way that I think most of the posters on Jeff's site understand, or are trying to do...I mean in realizing that all this is about US as a special subset of creatures, and these disparate strands are not some disconnected, intellectual puzzle. It is a true picture of our lives we're trying to fill out, and we're all trying to do our bit to cough up a right, true, but tiny piece that someone else has the mates for.

Not only is this a great, unusual piece of drama (still unclassifiable by the usual genres), but there's hope in it for those of us who can sniff something foul on the winds.

Anyway, a lighter thread.

I don't know if Edge of Darkness travelled as widely in the US as it did here in Canada, where I've seen it three or four times on television.

Thoughts...observations...etc.?

Cheers,
GH

Could you give a brief synopsis...

...or a link to summarize what it was about? I never heard of it.

Synchronicity: Just as I opened this thread, I was listening to Knopfler's guitar riffs on "Sultan of Swing"!

geoff,
That was mid-eighties, yes?
I'm afraid that was the last throes of the Alastair Milne BBC.
Thatcher sacked him for programmes like that.

A good place to look for information is Tony Gosling's site Bilderberg.org
Tony used to work at the BBC and watched it all destroyed.
He also has an excellent website.

There are a few little links here and there. One I really like is at:

www.bbc.co.uk/cult/classic/edge/

VIDEO CLIPS

VIDEO CLIP:Titles Where's the plutonium?

VIDEO CLIP:Bunker The plot summarised

Click the video clip 'Bunker the plot summarised' ...as it is a great scene (speaking as a writer...Jeff and I used to work together at a few different satirical mags in Canada)...I even transcribed it a few years ago, thinking that the '

C: And who is he?
J: He's part of the dark forces who would rule this planet.
C: Do you believe in all that stuff?
J: Yeah. Sure. Why not?....etc.

Americans should take great pride in Joe Don Baker's portrayal of the cia agent Jedburgh. Really amazing.

The cut-outs, intelligence games and the like would engage most here...and ring with what our insticts are telling us.

As for other links...just google. It really is a cult classic, in ALL the right meanings of such a hackneyed phrase.

Cheers,
GH
