Left Wing Gate Keeping In Excelsis

Postby HMKGrey » Sat Jul 15, 2006 3:03 pm

From the usually quite witty and worthwhile Americablog:

Is Israel going to attack Syria and Iran?
by John in DC - 7/15/2006 10:20:00 AM

Rumors have started.

A few weeks ago, Israeli had its fighters buzz the Syrian presidential palace. That was rather gutsy, and in-your-face. There's speculation in some circles that Israeli may bomb Damascus or Tehran in the coming weeks, and I have to say, I'm not sure I'd have a problem with that.

My logic is this. Israel bombing civilians, bad. Israel bombing Lebanon when Hezbollah is the problem, bad (and I have a hard time believing Lebanon has the ability to do jack about Hezbollah). But the real culprits here are not the Lebanese, they're Syria and Iran who have been causing hell in Lebanon for decades.

If Israel has concrete proof that Syria and Iran are directly responsible for supporting Hezbollah and supplying them weapons, etc. (and I'd be surprised if they didn't), then it's difficult to say that Israel can't, or shouldn't, counterstrike against two countries that are attacking Israel via proxies.

Controversial, yes. But while I'm not 100% committed to this strategy, particularly because of the possibilities of any attack on Damascus or Tehran possibly spinning things out of control, it surely makes a lot more sense than the approach we took to dealing with Iraq. Perhaps there's a way to "contain" Iran and Syria.

Thoughts?

Comments (411) | Permanent Link |

=================================

My comment is #411.

I think we should ALL be contained, personally..

It's all too conveniant to marginalize an adversary while leaving yourself well armed. 'possibly spinning things out of control'

I wonder what people mean by this. Like, who's control? And if this is control....

problem with any rational theory here, is that Israel has mainly killed few dozen unarmed civilians in the last two days, and earlier last week, in Gaza.

that's better than ten thousand unarmed civilians dying (the american way, in iraq, for instance), but where is this leading?
and what are they planning to do next ?

Lots of angry people now in israel, waking up from the first shock of this "summer festival". Main question is, does our leadership know what it is doing ?

This has been predicted and is, actually, overdue, for months now,

Israel has to start a ME war because the US is broke and needs another war for its machine. Israel has to fight with its neighbours because that's all it knows. Compromise and legitimate negotiate is totally foreign to it...not to mention that it is so hated in the region that even if it were to change tack...it's far too late.

IMO it's all up to Russia and China whether they'll put up with this BS much longer. They have serious energy stakes in the region which the US/Israel are after. Will they defend them?

Stay tuned.

GC
