politics and the motorcycle accident

Postby Rigorous Intuition » Wed Sep 28, 2005 2:51 pm

Constantine is off the mark there. Dylan had transformed himself two years before the accident. And from what I understand, the accident was no big deal: more an excuse to save his life by getting off the road and cocooning with his family, and undergoing yet another transformation.

By the way, just picked up the Dylan issue of Mojo. Nice stuff there. I got a kick out of Terry Callier talking about "All Along the Watchtower":

People had been saying "Yes, I love you, you love me, we will be together, one two three." But you start talking about "There must be someway out of here, said the Joker to the Thief"...Well! Now we're getting down! We're talking about neuroses, psychoses, and other 'oses! He showed us that if you put these things in the right context, in the right emotional patterns and the right combinations of words, this is as valuable as anything else on this earth.

One of my favorite parts was when they talked about Johnny Cash giving his guitar to Dylan.

absolutely adore

Girl of the North Country

Well, if you're travelin' in the north country fair,
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline,
Remember me to one who lives there.
She once was a true love of mine.

Well, if you go when the snowflakes storm,
When the rivers freeze and summer ends,
Please see if she's wearing a coat so warm,
To keep her from the howlin' winds.

Please see for me if her hair hangs long,
If it rolls and flows all down her breast.
Please see for me if her hair hangs long,
That's the way I remember her best.

I'm a-wonderin' if she remembers me at all.
Many times I've often prayed
In the darkness of my night,
In the brightness of my day.

So if you're travelin' in the north country fair,
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline,
Remember me to one who lives there.
She once was a true love of mine.

Rock'n'roll selling out?

Postby robertdreed » Wed Sep 28, 2005 3:19 pm

"rock and roll is so silent on bush ,the war ,the class divisions..ALL SOLD OUT!!"

People keep blaming the artists. It isn't the artists, it's the fucking radio!!!

If you weren't around for it, you can't imagine how free FM "free-form progressive" radio formats were, prior to about 1975.

Of course, some people aren't going to be satisfied with anything a musician or artist does, unless it follows their didactic marching orders. The vindictive Left, some of whom have never forgiven Dylan for following his muse, i.e., maintaining his artistic integrity. Even worse than the Right, hating on the Dixie Chicks...the Vindictive Marxist-Leninist Left doesn't simply condemn work whose political content they don't agree with, they want to dictate the entire thematic content of artistic output, to serve their desired political ego trips.

Dreary-ass.

Edited by: robertdreed at: 9/28/05 1:33 pm

I agree radio is polluted and FM rocked in 60s and 70s BUT the war protests of the 60s -70s meant something and today the rock stars could make a grand difference at least a grand entry

THEIR SILENCE IS DEAFENING..call it blaming BUT there is plenty of blame to go around

Hey, you've got Steve Earle, Bruce Cockburn, Ani DiFranco, Iris Dement...there are others, that's just off the top of my head. None of whom get featured on commercial radio- especially the political material- but that isn't their fault.

Sometimes the best thing an artist can do is simply provide an alternative to the headspace of hatred and militarism.

I guess we've each proven each other's point, proldic.

Let the people decide the respective merit of those points.

Edited by: robertdreed at: 9/28/05 1:38 pm

I was more thinking about the lurkers- the audience- but everybody gets a vote. Of course. Including you.

Edited by: robertdreed at: 9/28/05 1:41 pm

How did I guess that when I started reading this thread that someone would accuse Dylan of being an Illuminati/CIA shill?

That must be your rigorous intuition, professor.

And the day that the Marxist-Leninist Revolution comes, the first priority will be to purge those people. Turning the lights back on will have to wait.

Edited by: robertdreed at: 9/28/05 1:47 pm

They'll have to wait too, I suppose.

Unless you're talking about purging them.

Edited by: robertdreed at: 9/28/05 1:50 pm

so, just to be clear, we're asking US-European, white, college-educated, intellectuals who frequent computer-discussion boards to decide the relative merits, on the question of Bob Dylan's social-artistic worthiness?

ok...uh-huh, that seems fair.

Like, does my 'vote' count for 1000, or something?
