Over here on english TV,there was no mention at all of this monologue- we got the 2 prezidents and their nuculur ei ei o intersexual relations and nothing more..so thanks for posting the transcript.
The english broadcast gave the impression that here was a president who was able to laugh at himself. It was quite amusing, but it reminded me of his 'searching for WMD' slideshow..I found myself asking if this latest routine was inappropriate in the present circumstances..but now I feel like I was manipulated into that question by the total censorship of the monologue.Does that make sense?

Edited by: OpLan at: 5/1/06 2:34 pm

another media bandaid over the truth

Postby darkbeforedawn » Mon May 01, 2006 10:54 am

That's disgusting. It's going on eveywhere. The mainstream media here in the states so far has presented this as "cute" and "amusing" and isn't the president broadminded and self-effacing. Nothing is said about the brutally pointed jabs at their integrety, their humanity and their legitimacy. It makes me sick. Thanks for sharing what is happening in the UK (?) or whereever you write from...

no surprise here, but still remarkable:

elisabeth bumiller's white house column in the NYT today is exclusively about bush laughing at himself with his double. not a single mention of colbert. the boys over at powerline take it a step further, saying bush was a hit and colbert bombed.

i think i live in a different world than these people...

CNN is featuring video from the event on their front page:

Bush imposter steals the show

javascript:cnnVideo('play','/video/us/2006/04/29/white.house.dinner.cnn','2006/05/07');

Uh huh.

I guess truthiness to power is too much for the corportate media to handle.

The emperor is fucking naked, but in today's version of the story the kid who blurts out the truth gets ignored and everyone goes back to telling His Highness that his garments are magnificent.

Wonkette on Colbert's WHCD appearance

Postby robertdreed » Mon May 01, 2006 8:18 pm

Why the "trying-to-make-offical D.C.- hip" blog Wonkette has taken a nosedive into oblivion:

1) Comments on their blog are "by invitation only."

"Comments Terms of Use

The comments sections on GM Sites are accessible to users by invitation only (such invitations coming either from Gawker Media editors directly or by referral from existing comment users). Re: Bush imposter "steals the show"

The "self-deprecating" Bush impersonator sketch is even worse than I had imagined. The impression itself wasn't even that accurate - imo because Bridges didn't display the slightest trace of Bush's bitter & contemptuous sneer. And this section in particular was a little bit creepy - hm, maybe even more than a little bit. (The gag was that the real Bush made polite comments, while the impersonator said what Bush was "really" thinking.)

Quote:

BUSH IMPERSONATOR: It's just a bunch of media types. Hollywood liberals, Democrats like Joe Biden. Speaking of suspects, where's the Great White Hunter?

PRESIDENT BUSH: I am sorry Vice President Cheney couldn't be here tonight.

(Cheers and applause)

I agree with the press that Dick was a little late reporting that hunting episode down in Texas. In fact, I didn't know a thing about it until I saw him on "America's Most Wanted."

BUSH IMPERSONATOR: Cheney, what a goofball.

(Laughter)

newsbusters.org/node/5151

Video here (also here) if you can stand to watch. Although overall, it probably wasn't quite as bad as his "whoops no WMD's" slideshow from the 2004 dinner.

Edited by: albion at: 5/2/06 2:20 am

I didn't get one of Colbert's jokes

Postby johnny nemo » Wed May 03, 2006 3:46 pm

Can someone explain what he meant by the "McClellan, eager to retire. Really felt like he needed to spend more time with Andrew Card’s children." line?

Pardon my ignorance.

i was wondering when someone would mention that..
The camera had perfect timing too,it panned to McClellan, and the change of expression from the big smile he had before he fully realised where Colbert was going was priceless..

it had to be more than just a cruel joke?

When Card retired, he brought out the "spend more time with my kids" canard.

McClellan has no family with which to form such a transparent excuse, hence the joke.

Is it that McClellan doesn't have a family, so he can't use that transaparent excuse in his own right, he needs to borrow Card's?
