I don't know much about blogs, but I'd be happy to help. If there is to be a move to another system, though, my main suggestion is to move to one with a wiki feature. I think that format would lend itself well to how many people use and view this blog and forum.

Have you tried the Blogger forum?

Postby Avalon » Thu Jun 08, 2006 9:06 am

Yes, I joined the Blogger help group a few days ago. A good place to vent, but I haven't found any fixes there yet.

It looks like storage isn't the issue. That's pretty cheap for Blogger and they have it in abundance.

For those familiar with the Blogger interface, when I try to publish it times out, at anywhere from 0% to 81%, and I often get the error message "001 Broken Pipe." The problem doesn't seem to be on my end; I saw a test post from Blogger a couple of days ago that only made it to the June archives as well.

A bit of good news. Someone on a LInux forum I belong to says that if you sign up for wordpress: www.wordpress.com they can transfer all of your posts as long as you have the password. That sounds positive. Bad news is is that there is no mention of it on the front page, but I guess you have to sign up for it...I'm doing so now just to check it out.

There's also at least one program I've found called webhttrack that can download websites and preserve directory structure. It is available for Linux and that other operating system that slips my mind just now. Doors? Shutters? Can't remember. check it out here: www.httrack.com/page/2/en/index.html It's free as in free beer and as in open source. I'm no computer genius but I'd be happy to do this for you if it's difficult.

Ah...I just signed up at Wordpress and they do indeed have an import feature. No idea how it handles your setup with the automatic archiving, etc, but worth a shot. I'd go do it right now if I were you..you can simply delete the blog later if you decide not to use it.

Redirects are trickier. From a normal domain it's not that big a deal but a subdomain of blogger..no idea. And you can't do that with another blog as opposed to having your own web page.

Liking Wordpress. I set up a blog just to test it out. Nice thing is, wordpress is also available for use on YOUR server, so you can move to your own server smoothly if needed.

Not too much documentation..but much of it works like blogger.

it seems that size matters. because upon publishing, it says "this may take a while especially if your blog is large"...
---
maybe blogger is hinting they want some money from certain blogs...at least in mideastern commercial habits, they will first let you experience the horror and then suggest that beyond certain size/use...it is not free anymore, etc.

Blogger's always given that message about it taking a while if the blog is large. I think that's relevant only for users' speed of connection, not Blogger's storage capacity.

Jeff,

I'd recommend sticking with blogger and digging up some phone numbers of someone at the company. Give 'em a polite earful. I've always found that the time it takes to find a phone number and speak to a human being pays off.

The reason I suggest staying with Blogger is because of the extreme pain in the ass it would be to move everything, plus it will limit access to your older material via search engines.

I host my blog files on a separate server (not Blogger's, although I use them for managing the blog). Maybe that's an option?

Also, if you can, try updating the blog from another computer -- that will determine whether the problem is localized on your system.

If you want a techie...

Postby CTing » Thu Jun 08, 2006 2:41 pm

Hey jeff,

I've been a long time reader and occassional poster. This blogger bs is really making me sad. I'd love to help out. Glad to hear you registered the domain; if you want someone to help take care of setting stuff up, post a reply, and we can discuss it over email.

I've set up several sites using wordpress, and that's what I'd recommend for you too... personally, i prefer to do things myself rather than rely on others, so i'd set it up on my own server rather than on worpress.org.

PS. awesome war of the worlds image!!

Blogger.com is down today

Postby Rigorous Intuition » Thu Jun 08, 2006 3:41 pm

again, making any attempt to update impossible.

I'm going breath deeply and walk away for a while. Moving will be the last straw, and I'm not sure how soon that will be reached.

Yeah, it seems system-wide now. I can't post anything or even get to the dashboard.
